At the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) 2024 Bankers' Night in Lagos, CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso made this announcement. Historically, the industry has struggled with recurring issues, but we are confident that this approach will help change that narrative,” Cardoso stated. The Broader Implications of Compliance The governor of the CBN emphasized the wider effects of compliance on the financial system, pointing out that organizations that place a high priority on following regulations support stability and national progress. “A bank that prioritises compliance does more than protect itself -it strengthens the entire financial ecosystem. It directs financial resources toward growth, innovation, and prosperity rather than crime and corruption. Together, we must exceed standards, demonstrating to the public and the world that we are stewards of integrity and trust,” he added. How Jimmy Carter rose from humble peanut farmer to the Oval Office and Nobel Peace PrizeISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistani security forces launched an operation Tuesday night to disperse supporters of imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan who had gathered in the capital to demand his release from prison. The latest development came hours after thousands of Khan supporters, defying government warnings, broke through a barrier of shipping containers blocking off Islamabad and entered a high-security zone, where they clashed with security forces, facing tear gas shelling, mass detentions and gunfire. Tension has been high in Islamabad since Sunday when supporters of the former prime minister began a “long march” from the restive northwest to demand his release. Khan has been in a prison for over a year and faces more than 150 criminal cases that his party says are politically motivated. Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, led the protest, but she fled as police pushed back against demonstrators. Hundreds of Khan’s supporters are being arrested in the ongoing nighttime operation, and police are also seeking to arrest Bibi. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi told reporters that the Red Zone, which houses government buildings and embassies, and the surrounding areas have been cleared. Leaders from Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, or PTI, have also fled the protest site. Earlier Tuesday, Pakistan’s army took control of D-Chowk, a large square in the Red Zone, where visiting Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko is staying. Since Monday, Naqvi had threatened that security forces would use live fire if protesters fired weapons at them. “We have now authorized the police to respond as necessary,” Naqvi said Tuesday while visiting the square. Before the operation began, protester Shahzor Ali said people had taken to the streets because Khan had called for them. “We will stay here until Khan joins us. He will decide what to do next,” Ali said. “If they fire bullets again, we will respond with bullets,” he said. Protester Fareeda Bibi, who is not related to Khan’s wife, said people have suffered greatly for the last two years. “We have really suffered for the last two years, whether it is economically, politically or socially. We have been ruined. I have not seen such a Pakistan in my life,” she said. Authorities have struggled to contain the protest-related violence. Six people, including four members of the security services, were killed when a vehicle rammed them on a street overnight into Tuesday. A police officer died in a separate incident. Dozens of Khan supporters beat a videographer covering the protest for The Associated Press and took his camera. He sustained head injuries and was treated in a hospital. By Tuesday afternoon, fresh waves of protesters made their way unopposed to their final destination in the Red Zone. Most demonstrators had the flag of Khan’s party around their shoulders or wore its tricolors on accessories. Naqvi said Khan’s party had rejected a government offer to rally on the outskirts of the city. Information Minister Atta Tarar warned there would be a severe government reaction to the violence. He said the government did not want Bushra Bibi to achieve her goal of freeing Khan. “She wants bodies falling to the ground. She wants bloodshed,” he said. The government says only the courts can order Khan’s release. He was ousted in 2022 through a no-confidence vote in Parliament. In a bid to foil the unrest, police have arrested more than 4,000 Khan supporters since Friday and suspended mobile and internet services in some parts of the country. Messaging platforms were also experiencing severe disruption in the capital. Khan’s party relies heavily on social media and uses messaging platforms such as WhatsApp to share information, including details of events. The X platform, which is banned in Pakistan, is no longer accessible, even with a VPN. Last Thursday, a court prohibited rallies in the capital and Naqvi said anyone violating the ban would be arrested. Travel between Islamabad and other cities has become nearly impossible because of shipping containers blocking the roads. All education institutions remain closed. Pakistan's Stock Exchange lost more than $1.7 billion Tuesday due to rising political tensions, according to economist Mohammed Sohail from Topline Securities. Associated Press writers Munir Ahmed in Islamabad and Asim Tanveer in Multan, Pakistan, contributed to this report.
By Ifeanyi ONUBA The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, has once again brought global attention to the transformative role of NCS in safeguarding Nigeria’s borders. Speaking at the 18th Africa Security Watch Conference in Doha, Qatar, the CGC shared a comprehensive account of the Service’s achievements in balancing security enforcement with trade facilitation. In his keynote address titled “Protecting National Security Through Effective Border Control: The Nigeria Customs Example,” Adeniyi emphasised the vital role of border management in national security, describing borders as more than just geographical boundaries. According to him, borders are critical gateways that determine a nation’s capacity to protect its citizens, safeguard its economy, and foster security. The CGC highlighted how the NCS, empowered by the Nigeria Customs Act 2023, has successfully redefined its operational priorities to address emerging threats, enhance efficiency, and improve collaboration. CGC Adeniyi noted that the Nigeria Customs Act 2023 represents a legislative milestone that has repositioned the NCS to thrive in a dynamic environment. He also reflected on the significant strides made in 2024, which marked a year of unparalleled achievements for the Service, adding “Under my leadership, the NCS generated a record-breaking ₦5.1 trillion in revenue, a feat that underscores the agency’s innovative use of technology and improved compliance frameworks.” “We have equally strengthened partnerships with both domestic and international stakeholders. The CGC noted that this achievement was not merely about numbers but also reflected the efficiency and resilience of the Customs workforce.” He said. Adeniyi, however, described how, through intelligence-led operations, the NCS has intercepted several arms shipments, including 844 rifles and 112,500 rounds of live ammunition in Onne Seaport. “These efforts have significantly disrupted the proliferation of small arms and light weapons, which remain a persistent threat to national security. Additionally, the NCS’s collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) led to so many interceptions of illicit drugs.” CGC Adeniyi said. He also brought attention to the Service’s role in combating wildlife trafficking, detailing how officers intercepted 4,200 kilograms of pangolin scales and ivory, underscoring the NCS’s dedication to biodiversity conservation and international compliance. In the area of fighting against economic saboteurs who venture into smuggling and diversion of petroleum products, Adeniyi discussed the impact of Operation Whirlwind and highlighted how the Service, in collaboration with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), intercepted over 695,000 liters of smuggled Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). The CGC revealed that the use of geospatial technologies, such as satellite feeds and geo-mapping, has enhanced the Service’s surveillance and enforcement capabilities, ensuring that these operations are not only effective but sustainable. In addition, a Gala/Award Night convened as part of the African Security Watch Conference held on Thursday 12 December 2024, in Doha, Qatar, the NCS clinched the coveted ‘Best National Security Service in West, East, and Central Africa 2023/2024’ award. The CGC also shared the spotlight, receiving recognition for his exemplary leadership and contributions to the organization’s achievements. These accolades recognise the service’s outstanding performance in fortifying Nigeria’s borders, enhancing trade facilitation, and curbing transnational crimes through innovative enforcement strategies and technological advancements.Members of Fayette’s All Age Friendly Committee discuss in home care, in addition to obituary and will writing Nov. 18 at Starling Hall in Fayette. Submitted Photo FAYETTE — The Fayette All Age Friendly Committee [FAAFC] continues its mission to create opportunities for residents of all ages to age in place and foster a strong sense of community through programming and services. The committee, established under the direction of the board of selectmen, is housed at Starling Hall and has grown in its efforts to meet the evolving needs of Fayette, Mt. Vernon, and Vienna. “Our purpose is to enhance our residents’ ability to age in place, regardless of age,” said Lori Beaulieu, a member of the committee. “None of us wants to feel isolated, and these programs are here to make sure everyone has access to the help and connections they need.” The FAAFC hosts regular events at Starling Hall, including a quilting group on Dec. 3 and a game night on Dec. 6. These activities provide opportunities for residents to connect and engage. The committee also serves as a bridge for accessing resources such as respite care and companionship programs. “We are looking to find out what people’s needs are and how we can help them age in their homes,” said another member of the committee. The goal is to have a caring caller tree so they can know who wants to be contacted for some socialization. The committee comprises five members appointed by the board of selectmen: Lori Beaulieu, Deb Dubord, Diane Polky, Alma Rooney, and Elaine Wilcox. A Select Board member serves as a non-voting liaison, while administrative support is provided by the town manager. In a recent meeting, representatives from All-Med Staffing of New England, based in Augusta and Windham, shared their mission to provide professional healthcare staffing services and personal support specialists for in-home care. Danielle Charles, a manager at All-Med, emphasized the role of personal support specialists in maintaining independence. “We focus on activities of daily living like dressing, toileting, and meal prep,” she said. “It’s all about keeping individuals comfortable and safe in their homes.” Charles also discussed funding options and that it is possible Medicare can cover these services. “It’s great when a loved one can be the caregiver, and we offer training to family members to become certified personal support specialists,” Charles said. “If you think this might be right for a friend or family member, we can help figure out if they qualify.” Two representatives from All-Med Staffing of New England, seen at the end of table on left, discuss home care solutions at the All Ages Friendly Committee meeting Nov. 18 in Fayette. Submitted Photo All-Med representatives highlighted their growing operations. “Three years ago, we had 35 clients for home care. As of yesterday, we have 165,” Charles said. Amy Sherman, a service liaison at All-Med, shared her personal connection to the work. “I go to the consumers’ homes and let them know what the personal support specialist can do for them,” she said. “We also schedule supervisory visits at three or six months to make sure their needs are being met.” The FAAFC recently conducted a survey by mail and at the polls to identify residents’ needs. Results will help shape future programs, including the proposed “caring caller” tree to foster social connections. Christine Merchant, a coordinator funded by a grant set to expire soon, stressed the importance of outreach. “We need people to step forward, attend meetings, and volunteer to make a difference,” she said. Beaulieu echoed this sentiment, saying, “It’s not just about services. It’s about building connections and making sure no one feels alone.” The committee meets the third Monday of the month at Starling Hall from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Residents can contact Town Manager Mark Robinson at the Fayette town office for confidential assistance or to volunteer. The much-awaited Remix Finale live event has come to an end as over 14 million Fortnite players tune in to break all previous records and celebrate the Chapter 2 island one last time. The concert experience was a 20-minute show featuring Snoop Dogg, Eminem, late rapper Juice WRLD, and Ice Spice performing their hit tracks. However before the event began, players were dropped right in front of The Doggpound POI where they were allowed to free roam the area as a countdown timer was running out. But a couple of interactive elements in that location were something that offered players an exclusive glimpse at the future. Remix Finale live event teases Fortnite OG map During the Fortnite Remix Finale event, if players walk near the stairs of the entrance of Doggpound, they’ll see two TV screens in front; one on the left and one on the right. The screen on the right shows a 3-second teaser of the upcoming Chapter 6 Season 1. However, the left screen shows a 10-second teaser of the Fortnite OG mode with classic Jonesy and Peely skins, the OGH Battle Bus, and finally shows the entire Chapter 1 Season 1 map in its full glory from above. The tease, while did not have any music or any names of locations, players are confident that Epic is bringing back the OG graphics and the OG island with the upcoming game mode. Several players had their own thoughts on the OG map tease where one said, “I’ve this crazy theory: Jones goes into the past (idk how) and focuses on the OG season with Peely, and Hope looks after Chapter 6 and things that might happen in the coming season.” Another one wrote, “It’s good to be back. I hope the graphics appear the same way too lol.”

Los Angeles Chargers (7-4) at Atlanta (6-5) Sunday, 1 p.m. EST, CBS BetMGM NFL Odds: Chargers by 1 1/2 Series record: Falcons lead 8-4. Against the spread: Chargers 7-3-1, Falcons 5-6. Last meeting: Chargers beat Falcons 20-17 on Nov. 6, 2022, in Atlanta. Last week: Ravens beat Chargers, 30-23; Falcons had bye week following 38-6 loss at Denver on Nov. 17. Chargers offense: overall (21), rush (13), pass (20), scoring (18). Chargers defense: overall (13), rush (10), pass (10), scoring (13). Falcons offense: overall (8), rush (14), pass (5), scoring (16). Falcons defense: overall (25), rush (19), pass (26), scoring (26). Turnover differential: Chargers plus-8, Falcons minus-3. Chargers player to watch RB Gus Edwards will move up as the lead back for Los Angeles after J.K Dobbins (knee) was placed on injured reserve on Saturday. Edwards was activated from IR earlier this month following an ankle injury and had nine carries for 11 yards with a touchdown in Monday night's 30-23 loss to Baltimore. Falcons player to watch WR Drake London has 61 catches, leaving him four away from becoming the first player in team history to have at least 65 receptions in each of his first three seasons. London has 710 receiving yards, leaving him 140 away from becoming the first player in team history with at least 850 in each of his first three seasons. Key matchup Falcons RB Bijan Robinson vs. Chargers' run defense. Robinson was shut down by Denver, gaining only 35 yards on 12 carries, and the Atlanta offense couldn't recover. The Chargers rank 10th in the league against the run, so it will be a challenge for the Falcons to find a way to establish a ground game with Robinson and Tyler Allgeier. A solid running attack would create an opportunity for offensive coordinator Zac Robinson to establish the play-action passes for quarterback Kirk Cousins. Key injuries Besides Dobbins, the Chargers also placed S Alohi Gilman (hamstring) on injured reserve. CB Cam Hart (ankle) and LB Denzel Perryman (groin) also have been ruled out. ... The Falcons needed the bye to give a long list of injured players an opportunity to heal. WR WR KhaDarel Hodge (neck) did not practice on Wednesday. WR Darnell Mooney (Achilles), CB Kevin King (concussion), DL Zach Harrison (knee, Achilles) and WR Casey Washington (concussion) were hurt in the 38-6 loss at Denver on Nov. 17 and were limited on Wednesday. CB Mike Hughes (neck), nickel back Dee Alford (hamstring), ILB Troy Andersen (knee), TE Charlie Woerner (concussion) and ILB JD Bertrand (concussion) also were limited on Wednesday after not playing against Denver. C Drew Dalman (ankle) could return. Series notes The Chargers have won the past three games in the series following six consecutive wins by the Falcons from 1991-2012. Los Angeles took a 33-30 overtime win in Atlanta in 2016 before the Chargers added 20-17 wins at home in 2020 and in Atlanta in 2022. The Falcons won the first meeting between the teams, 41-0 in San Diego in 1973. Stats and stuff Each team has built its record on success against the soft NFC South. Atlanta is 4-1 against division rivals. Los Angeles is 2-0 against the NFC South this season. The Chargers have a four-game winning streak against the division. ... Atlanta is 0-2 against AFC West teams, following a 22-17 loss to Kansas City and the lopsided loss at Denver. The Falcons will complete their tour of the AFC West with a game at the Las Vegas Raiders on Dec. 16. ... The Falcons are the league's only first-place team with a negative points differential. Atlanta has been outscored 274-244. Fantasy tip The loss of Dobbins, who has rushed for eight touchdowns, could put more pressure on QB Justin Hebert and the passing game. Herbert's favorite option has been WR Ladd McConkey, who has four TD receptions among his 49 catches for 698 yards. McConkey, the former University of Georgia standout who was drafted in the second round, could enjoy a productive return to the state against a Falcons defense that ranks only 26th against the pass.
