GAZA/SANAA: Zionist air strikes pummeled Sanaa’s international airport and other targets in Yemen on Thursday, a day after the latest attacks on the Zionist entity by Houthi rebels. The strikes targeting the airport, military facilities and power stations followed rising hostilities between the Zionist entity and the Houthis. Three people were killed and 14 were left wounded or missing after the Zionist attacks. The head of the World Health Organization, who was at Sanaa airport amid Zionist bombardment, said there was damage to infrastructure but he remained safe. “One of our plane’s crewmembers was injured. At least two people were reported killed at the airport,” Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus posted on X, adding that other UN staff were also safe but their departure was delayed until repairs could be made. The rebel-held capital’s airport was struck by “more than six” attacks with raids also targeting the adjacent Al-Dailami air base, a witness told AFP. A series of strikes were also fired at a power station in Hodeida, a witness and the Iran-backed Houthis’ official Al-Masirah TV station said. Houthi spokesperson Mohammed Abdulsalam called the strikes, which came a day after the Houthis fired a missile and two drones at the Zionist entity, “a Zionist crime against all the Yemeni people”. Zionist Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday that his country’s strikes on Houthi rebels would continue “until the job is done”. The Zionist military said targets included “military infrastructure” at the airport and power stations in Sanaa and Hodeida, as well as other facilities at Hodeida, Salif and Ras Kanatib ports. In Gaza, a Palestinian TV channel affiliated said five of its journalists were killed Thursday in a Zionist strike on their vehicle. A missile hit the journalists’ broadcast truck as it was parked in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, according to a statement from their employer, Al-Quds Today. The channel is affiliated with Islamic Jihad, whose militants have fought alongside Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The station identified the five staffers as Faisal Abu Al-Qumsan, Ayman Al-Jadi, Ibrahim Al-Sheikh Khalil, Fadi Hassouna and Mohammed Al-Ladaa. They were killed “while performing their journalistic and humanitarian duty”, the statement said. “We affirm our commitment to continue our resistant media message,” it added. In a statement naming the five killed, the Zionist military claimed intelligence had “confirmed that these individuals were Islamic Jihad operatives posing as journalists”. According to witnesses in Nuseirat, a missile fired by a Zionist aircraft hit the broadcast vehicle, which was parked outside Al-Awda Hospital, setting the vehicle on fire and killing those inside. The Committee to Protect Journalists’ Middle East arm said the organization was “devastated by the reports that five journalists and media workers were killed inside their broadcasting vehicle by a (Zionist) strike”. “Journalists are civilians and must always be protected,” it added in a statement on social media. Video from the scene of Thursday’s attack showed the twisted wreckage of a white van with what appeared to be the remnants of the word “PRESS” in red on the back doors. Later on Thursday, dozens of relatives and fellow journalists took part in the funerals of the five journalists, whose bodies were wrapped in white shrouds. Blue flak jackets bearing the word “PRESS” were placed on top of the shrouded bodies. Women wept besides the bodies as men performed special prayers before burials. Medics said the five were among at least 26 people killed in Zionist air assaults across the Palestinian enclave before dawn. They said 13 other people were killed and 25 wounded in a Zionist airstrike on a house in Gaza City’s Zeitoun neighborhood. The death toll could rise as many people were trapped under the rubble, they added. In Gaza City, a Zionist strike on a house in the suburb of Sabra killed eight more people, medics said, bringing Thursday’s death toll to 26. The Zionist military said a 35-year-old soldier was killed in the central Gaza Strip. The chief pediatric doctor at a southern Gaza hospital told AFP that three babies had died of “severe temperature drop” this week, as the war-ravaged Palestinian territory grapples with winter cold. In the most recent case, Dr Ahmed al-Farra of Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis city said a three-week-old girl “was brought to the emergency room with a severe temperature drop, which led to her death”. Farra, the head of the hospital’s pediatric services, mentioned two other cases his team handled on Tuesday. “A three-day-old baby and another baby, less than a month old, both died after a severe temperature drop,” he said. “This is due to the fact that they live in tents,” added the doctor, referring to Palestinians displaced by the more than 14-month war in Gaza who have sought shelter in makeshift camps, many in the coastal Khan Yunis area. “The tents do not protect from the cold, and it gets very cold at night, with no way to keep warm,” said Farra. The risk to newborns is particularly acute, he added, as many mothers suffer malnutrition affecting the quality of the milk their babies feed on. The deceased three-week-old girl, Sila Al-Faseeh, lived in the Al-Mawasi tent city, on the Mediterranean coast near Khan Yunis. Her father, Mahmoud Al-Faseeh, told AFP that in her final hours, “the little girl woke up two or three times during the night to breastfeed”. In the morning, the parents saw “she had bitten her tongue and was bleeding”, said the father. “We took her to the doctor, who told us it was due to the cold, and there have been several cases with similar symptoms.” Faseeh said it was “extremely cold, and the tent is not suitable for living. The children are always sick.” Zionist National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir visited Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa mosque compound on Thursday, triggering angry reactions from the Palestinian Authority and Jordan accusing the far-right politician of a deliberate provocation. “I went up to the site of our temple this morning to pray for the peace of our soldiers, the swift return of all hostages and a total victory, God willing,” Ben Gvir said in a message on social media platform X. He also posted a photo of himself on the holy site, with members of the Zionist security forces and the famed golden Dome of the Rock in the background. The Al-Aqsa compound in Jerusalem’s Old City is Islam’s third-holiest site and a symbol of Palestinian national identity. The Palestinian Authority’s foreign ministry said in a statement that it “condemns” Ben Gvir’s latest visit, calling his prayer at the site a “provocation to millions of Palestinians and Muslims”. Jordan, which administers the mosque compound, similarly condemned what its foreign ministry called Ben Gvir’s “provocative and unacceptable” actions. The ministry’s statement decried a “violation of the historical and legal status quo”. The office of Netanyahu said in a brief statement that “the status quo on the Temple Mount has not changed”. – Agencies
A WOMAN has divided opinion after she revealed she ditched being maid of honour at her best friend's wedding to work instead. Amy Dikinson, from Queensland, Australia , was originally looking forward to supporting her childhood bestie on her big day. But that all quickly went downhill when Amy received the invitation only to realise the wedding day clashed with a work event already in her calendar. Taking to TikTok, Amy explained that although the story might put her in a bad light, it was really her mate who caused all the drama. It turns out that the work event was no little obligation Amy could get out of, but rather a big event for her own business she'd been planning for ages and had already put a lot of time and money into. "My best friend decided to book her wedding on the same day, was this intentional? I think so," Amy explained in the viral video. READ MORE ON WEDDINGS In the clip, the entrepreneur went on to call her former best friend "petty and bitter". So, Amy made her feelings known loud and clear by ripping up the invitation and sending it back to her friend, along with her bridesmaid dress which she also cut into multiple pieces. Speaking to Femail , Amy said this isn't the first time her friend has been so petty, and noted that she'd always been a little bit jealous of her success. "We would go shopping and something would look amazing and she would screw her face up and say she hates it - but then something would look awful and she would say to buy it," Amy said. Most read in Fabulous What made Amy even more convinced her friend had booked her wedding on the same day on purpose was the fact it was "a random Thursday in February" - not a day with any meaning to her pal. "It's a Thursday! That makes it so much worse, who is getting married on a Thursday? She definitely did that on purpose," one person commented on the video. And another wrote: "Your friend was clearing sabotaging your business!" Amy replied to one of the comments, revealing that she ended up blocker her former bestie on social media because of the drama. Meanwhile, someone else said: "You definitely need to reconsider this friendship and boundaries. She doesn't sound like your best friend. Best friend and longest friend are different." And others suggested Amy should call the venue to see if she had really booked her wedding for the same day. However, not everyone was convinced by Amy's story and thought she could be making it all up to get attention for her business. "I feel like this story is really good marketing for your event, I'm not sure if it's true but slay," one person commented. READ MORE SUN STORIES "Sorry, but this scream marketing," another said. Minutes of an Executive meeting from June of that year state further action would be considered “as appropriate” if the DUP went ahead with a threat to rotate its ministers. The minutes are within files which have been declassified at the Public Record Office in Belfast. Devolved powersharing had been restored to Northern Ireland in May 2000 when Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble had received the backing of his party to go back into the Assembly, despite there having been no decommissioning of IRA arms at that point. Then DUP deputy leader Mr Robinson and Mr Dodds took up the offices as ministers for regional development and social development, but refused to attend Executive meetings due to the presence of Sinn Fein ministers. The party also said it would rotate its ministerial posts to prevent other parties from taking them. A minute of an Executive meeting on June 8 said Mr Robinson and Mr Dodds had refused a request from First Minister Mr Trimble and deputy First Minister Seamus Mallon to meet with them “to discuss recent public comments by the DUP concerning their positions as ministers”. The minute records that the Executive endorsed a proposal from the First and deputy First Ministers to write again to the two DUP ministers setting out sanctions against them. It says: “The First Minister and and Deputy First Minister would assume responsibility for representing the Executive Committee on transport matters at the British-Irish Council in place of the Minister for Regional Development. “The Minister for Social Development and the Minister for Regional Development would not be nominated to attend meetings of the Joint Ministerial Committee. “Pending the receipt of satisfactory assurances from DUP Ministers regarding the confidentiality and integrity of Executive Committee business, the Minister for Social Development and Minister for Regional Development would not receive Executive Committee papers as of right. “The First Minister and Deputy First Minister would seek briefing, as appropriate, from officials in the Department for Regional Development and Department for Social Development.” The minute continues: “If the DUP carried out their threat to change the holders of the two Ministerial offices on a frequent basis, the Executive Committee would consider other action as appropriate.” Mr Robinson and Mr Dodds resigned as ministers on June 27 and were replaced by party colleagues Gregory Campbell and Maurice Morrow. A minute from an Executive meeting that day says: “The Executive Committee noted that the Minister for Social Development and Minister for Regional Development would be resigning their posts that afternoon, and expressed concern at the proposed rotation of the ministries held by their Party Members.”
Sinn Fein was accused of “ignoring” the role 3,000 Troubles deaths had in damaging community relations in Northern Ireland in a memo sent to a direct rule minister in 2003. Declassified files show the note to former MP John Spellar also said the republican party had ignored the “visceral component of sectarianism” in responding to a new government good relations strategy. Mr Spellar, then a Northern Ireland Office minister, had launched a consultation on the “A Shared Future” document, an attempt to address community divisions, segregation and sectarianism in the region at a time when the devolved powersharing institutions were suspended. A file at the Public Record Office in Belfast shows that OFMDFM official Chris Stewart wrote to the minister in July about a response to the document from Sinn Fein representative Bairbre de Brun. Mr Stewart told Mr Spellar that Ms de Brun’s letter had been critical of the document and was clearly intended to “mark your card”. He said among a number of points raised by de Brun was that “the promotion of equality is the key to improving community relations”. His memo adds: “Sinn Fein is clearly seeking to position or align the issue of community relations within its equality and human rights agenda. “This general Sinn Fein position has resulted in a simplistic analysis of community relations, which is flawed in its description of the causes and necessary policy response. “There is of course, no doubt that a lack of equality has been a contributing factor to poor community relations. “However, Sinn Fein ignores the many other factors, not least the violent conflict that resulted in over 3,000 deaths. “Sinn Fein also portrays poor community relations (for nationalists) as being a purely rational response to the political situation. “This ignores the more visceral component of sectarianism, which is all too prevalent in both communities.” Mr Stewart continues: “To suggest, as Sinn Fein does, that the promotion of equality should be the key component of good relations policy is to ignore the key message in A Shared Future, that indirect approaches alone are insufficient to deal with sectarianism and the abnormal relationship between sections of the Northern Ireland community.” The official recommended the minister invite representatives of Sinn Fein to a meeting to discuss the policy. The file also contains a note about Mr Spellar’s meeting with DUP representatives Maurice Morrow and Peter Weir the following month to discuss the document. The note says: “Morrow said he had no problem with sharing the future and suggested that the first step to that would be an election to decide who spoke for whom – though he was quick to say he didn’t want politics to dominate the meeting.” It adds: “Weir said that the biggest step towards improving community relations would be the creation of a political environment that had the broad support of both unionism and nationalism, and the GFA (Good Friday Agreement) could not create that environment.”
1 2 Patna: Bihar lived up to its reputation as the land of sharp political developments in 2024 with chief minister Nitish Kumar making yet another dramatic U-turn. This time, he returned to the BJP-led NDA after abruptly severing ties with the RJD-led Grand Alliance. The upheaval turned Tejashwi Prasad Yadav , who had been the deputy CM, into the leader of opposition overnight. The series of alliances and breakups — NDA in 2020, Grand Alliance in 2022 and NDA again in 2024 — cemented Bihar's image as the land of political unpredictability. Nitish-Lalu break-up: The cracks in the Grand Alliance began to show when the Narendra Modi-led central govt posthumously conferred the Bharat Ratna on former Bihar CM Karpoori Thakur. Nitish and his JD(U) were quick to laud the PM's decision. The centenary celebration of Karpoori Thakur, organised by JD(U) in Patna, turned out to be the tipping point. Nitish criticised the UPA for its dynastic politics and praised Modi's governance, marking the end of the alliance. "Karpoori Thakur's legacy is beyond politics and the Bharat Ratna honour reflects true respect for his contributions," Nitish said. Four days later, he dissolved the Grand Alliance and took oath as CM for a record ninth time, this time with the NDA. Foes turn deputies: Nitish's return to the NDA brought surprising allies into his fold. BJP leader Samrat Choudhary, who had vowed to remove his turban only after Nitish was ousted, not only became his deputy but also made a pilgrimage to Ayodhya to shave his head in gratitude. Another deputy, Vijay Kumar Sinha, who had clashed with Nitish during assembly debates, also joined the govt. These alliances highlighted the fluid nature of Bihar's politics. Lok Sabha triumph and assembly bypolls: The JD(U)-BJP alliance delivered a strong performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, winning 30 of Bihar's 40 seats. JD(U) secured 12, making it the second-largest NDA ally after TDP. Nitish's support also helped the NDA win all four assembly by-polls in Bihar, cementing the alliance's grip on the state. ‘Ab yahin rahenge': Shortly after rejoining the NDA, Nitish coined the phrase "ab yahin rahenge" at a rally with PM Modi in Aurangabad. The line became his recurring assurance to NDA leaders and voters alike. "Idhar-udhar nahin jayenge, ab yahin rahenge," he reiterated at multiple events. Rohini's political foray: The general elections also saw RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav's daughter, Rohini Acharya, debuting in politics. Contesting from the Saran Lok Sabha seat, she narrowly lost to BJP's Rajiv Pratap Rudy by just over 13,000 votes. However, Lalu's eldest daughter, Misa Bharti, won the Patliputra seat on her third attempt, making her the eighth member of the family in active politics. Chirag in, Paras out: Chirag Paswan, president of LJP (Ram Vilas), reasserted his importance in NDA politics. The BJP allotted five Lok Sabha seats to his faction, sidelining his uncle Pashupati Kumar Paras, who resigned from the Modi cabinet. "Chirag is the rightful heir to Ram Vilas Paswan's legacy," a senior BJP neta said. PK's electoral entry: Poll strategist Prashant Kishor ventured into active politics with his party, Jan Suraaj, positioning it as an alternative to the NDA and Grand Alliance. However, his debut was lacklustre. His candidates lost all four by-polls and the Bihar council seat with two candidates replaced mid-campaign. The losses branded him a "vote-splitter," raising doubts about his political future. JD(U)'s voter base: For the first time, JD(U) netas openly criticised the Muslim community for not supporting the party. MP Devesh Chandra Thakur publicly declared he would not work for communities that did not vote for him. Later, Union minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh echoed similar sentiments. "Minority communities don't vote for Nitish Kumar," he said. The remarks triggered debates about the party's voter base. Rifts in INDIA bloc: The opposition INDIA bloc faced internal tensions over leadership. Lalu Prasad supported West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee to head the alliance while Tejashwi diplomatically suggested a consensus-based decision. Sharad Pawar also backed Mamata, exposing fissures within the bloc. Shah's cryptic remarks: Union home minister Amit Shah fuelled speculation when he avoided naming Nitish Kumar in discussions about NDA's leadership post-2025 elections. JD(U) retaliated by posting slogans like "Jab baat Bihar ki ho, naam sirf Nitish Kumar ka ho" on its social media handles. BJP netas later clarified that Nitish would lead the NDA's campaign in Bihar. Stay updated with the latest news on Times of India . Read unlimited articles for free today: Already have an account? ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) — Alex Ovechkin has not missed many games during his two decades in the NHL with the Washington Capitals, and that remarkable durability is one reason why he is fast-approaching Wayne Gretzky’s career goals record. The Capitals had lost 33 of their 59 games without Ovechkin in the lineup during his first 19 seasons, including 23 of 36 over the past decade. In stark contrast to that, they’ve won six of nine since the 39-year-old captain was sidelined by a broken left fibula — a testament to a roster built not only to help him break the record but prepare the organization for the post-Ovechkin era. “Ovi, he’s a legend, he’s special, he’s always going to probably lead the team in goals and we’re a better team with him, but we’re also a team where I think we’re not necessarily maybe relying on one or two players to win games,” said center Lars Eller, who rejoined the team in a trade from Pittsburgh a month ago. “We have four pretty strong lines, three D pairs and two good goalies. We don’t depend on one or two individuals, and I think that’s the strength of the team.” Depth fortified by the additions of centers Dylan Strome, Pierre-Luc Dubois and Eller, wingers Andrew Mangiapane, Brandon Duhaime and Taylor Raddysh, defensemen Jakob Chychrun, Matt Roy and Rasmus Sandin and goaltenders Charlie Lindgren and Logan Thompson over the past few years has been the key to remaining a playoff contender. Longtime general manager Brian MacLellan, who after the most recent makeover this past summer handed day-to-day duties to Chris Patrick and moved upstairs as president of hockey operations, excelled in keeping Washington’s winning window open with Ovechkin in the second-to-last year of his contract. Veteran defenseman John Carlson said the infusion of talent “really lit a fire under everybody.” The Capitals led the Eastern Conference when Ovechkin got injured Nov. 18, and they remain atop the East more than three weeks into his absence. Fourteen players have scored a goal during this stretch, including six wins and an overtime defeat since losing the first two without him. “We’re a deep group,” said right winger Tom Wilson, the team’s leading scorer during this stretch with nine points on five goals and four assists who expects to continue playing with a shield protecting his face after breaking a small bone in the sinus cavity area on the left side. “Everybody’s kind of stepping up on any given night. It’s a real group effort, and I think guys are really playing for each other.” Carlson, who along with Ovechkin, Wilson and now Eller upon return are the only players left from Washington’s 2018 Stanley Cup championship team, also sees it as a case of younger teammates taking advantage of this chance. “There’s the colossal emptiness of it, but there’s also a lot of opportunity for guys who would never otherwise be there when he’s on this team,” Carlson said. “When someone goes down, it’s obviously always kind of a rallying thing where guys need to step up, guys need to fill in and play bigger roles and play more minutes. But I think the way that our team’s built is depth, and that’s been our strength this year is kind of contributions from everybody.” Ovechkin led all players with 15 goals when he went down, and the Capitals were the high-scoring team in the league at 4.33 goals a game. They still are, down just a tick to an average of 4.04, and their 16 goals from defensemen are a big reason for that after ranking second-last in blue line production last season. “We’re playing to our structure and doing what we want to do out there,” said Chychrun, who has eight points in nine games as part of an impressive start to his contract year. “We’ve got a D corps where everybody’s a really good player on that back end and can play in all situations and two-way guys and guys who have contributed offensively throughout their career.” Another major defense is second-year coach Spencer Carbery, who acknowledged the structure and playing standard as a good place to start but pointed the credit to veteran leaders like Carlson, Strome, Wilson and Nic Dowd for shepherding the Capitals through Ovechkin-less hockey. “They don’t go around the room and go, ‘Hey, we’ve got to do more, guys,’” Carbery said. “They don’t announce it, but what they do is they think about it and go: ‘OK, we’re missing him. I’ve got to step my game up and I need to bring more.’ And that’s not just on the ice, on the power play, on 5 on 6 when we’re defending a lead. It’s not just the Xs and Os. It’s in the locker room. It’s energy in practice. It’s all the things that he brings every day when he’s in the lineup and when he’s practicing.” Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. Ovechkin skated before practice Wednesday and got an assist from longtime running mate Nicklas Backstrom, who stepped away 13 months ago because of a lingering hip injury. Carlson quipped, “I think Ovi wanted someone with a little more skill passing him the rock out there.” The day is coming soon when Ovechkin returns to team drills and then game action. The Capitals are doing more than stay afloat without him, but they’ll welcome him back with open arms the moment he’s ready. As Eller said, “Obviously I think we’re even better when he’s in the lineup.” ___ AP NHL: https://apnews.com/hub/nhl Advertisement Advertisement
Long waits for NHS services could lead people to take matters into their own hands by buying potentially unsafe weight-loss jabs online, Britain’s top GP has said. Prof Kamila Hawthorne, the chair of the Royal College of GPs, warned that buying drugs online from unregulated retailers could put people at risk and they may also miss out on wraparound support offered alongside the medication. She also expressed concerns about the safety of cheaper alternatives to the pre-filled injection pens, which involve preparing part of the medicine at home. Her warning came as the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) cautioned against buying illegal weight-loss medicines without a prescription through beauty salons, fake pharmacy websites or on social media, saying these products could contain “toxins and other ingredients that could cause real harm”. Andy Morling, the MHRA’s deputy director of criminal enforcement, said: “At this time of year, with many of us thinking about shedding a little excess weight, we see people offering weight-loss medicines for sale as a quick fix, without a healthcare professional’s prescription.” Urging people to exercise caution, he said “criminals go to great lengths to make their website storefronts look authentic and convincing”. “These are not cosmetic treatments; they are powerful medicines that can only be legally and safely dispensed against a prescription issued by a healthcare professional,” he added. Hawthorne said the population was “gradually getting bigger and bigger,” leading to widespread chronic illness. In an interview with the PA Media news agency, she said she had “serious concerns” about “quite a lot of people” buying weight-loss drugs privately, as “some of these places are not fully regulated”. The demand was in part being driven by very long waits for weight-loss support, she added, calling on the government to adequately fund services. “If you’re faced with a two-year waiting time and you want to lose weight now, and you know that there is a way that you can lose weight, you know that drug works because nobody’s denying that they don’t work, you might well decide that you’re going to just sort it out yourself,” Hawthorne said. “I would definitely suggest that you come and talk to your doctor or practice nurse about what you’re intending to do and let them help you,” she said. “Please don’t go off and buy a [weight-loss injection] unless it is under the supervision of a medically qualified doctor.” A recent Obesity Health Alliance (OHA) report revealed some patients were having to wait for up to five years for specialist support, while some services are so overstretched that they have closed their waiting lists entirely. Katharine Jenner, the OHA’s director, told PA Media the drugs “offer hope of tangible improvements in the lives of people with severe, chronic obesity”, but they were “only safe and effective for those for whom they are medically appropriate, as prescribed by a legitimate prescriber, and are not a long-term solution for the millions of people living with obesity”. An NHS rollout of the so-called “King Kong” of weight-loss jabs, Mounjaro, is scheduled to take 12 years. An estimated 220,000 people could benefit from the drug in the first three years, out of about 3.4 million people estimated to be eligible, with those at highest need prioritised.
