'I felt so worthless': How tennis star Jelena Dokic escaped her violent pastThe Middle Belt Forum (MBF) has criticized the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajuddeen Abbas, over plans to locate four new federal institutions of higher learning in Zaria, urging for equitable distribution of such schools across other parts of Kaduna State. According to the forum, Zaria, located in Zone 1 of the state, is already over-concentrated with federal institutions, leaving Zones 2 and 3, including Southern Kaduna, significantly underdeveloped in terms of federal educational facilities. In a statement on Sunday, Luka Binniyat, Chairman of the Kaduna chapter of MBF, acknowledged the facilitation of the four new institutions by Speaker Abbas but described the development as “insensitive and inconsiderate” to other zones, particularly Southern Kaduna. Binniyat revealed that the Speaker recently announced an allocation of ₦80 billion for the construction of the four schools, which are expected to be completed within 18 months. The proposed institutions include the Federal College of Nursing and Midwifery, the Federal College of Education, the Federal Open University, and the Federal College of Legal Studies. He highlighted that Zaria already hosts numerous federal institutions such as Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, and the Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), among others, bringing the total to 15 federal institutions in the town. Binniyat lamented the stark disparity in educational development, noting that Southern Kaduna, which occupies 57% of Kaduna State’s landmass and accounts for 52.1% of its population, has only one federal institution, the Federal School of Statistics, Manchok. He called on Nigerians, the National Assembly, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to address what he described as “prohibitive favoritism” toward one section of the state. Binniyat also questioned the process through which the Speaker secured approval for the four new institutions, noting a lack of transparency or public hearings on the matter. He urged the Speaker to recognize his expanded constituency as the leader of the House of Representatives and to ensure equitable development across Kaduna State. Binniyat concluded by calling on the people of Southern Kaduna to leverage their numerical strength and push for political power to address longstanding disparities in the state.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola says his players are hurting over their unprecedented five-match losing streak but he trusts them to turn the situation around. The 4-0 home loss to Tottenham was a shattering blow just days after Guardiola signed a new two-year contract at the club. It was City's heaviest home defeat since 2003 and the first time they have lost five games in a row since 2006, before Sheikh Mansour began his trophy-ladened time as owner. Guardiola has never previously lost five successive games in his entire managerial career. It also leaves City eight points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool, following the Reds' 3-2 win at Southampton on Sunday. "I trust these players more than ever," said Guardiola. "I've never seen a player in my life who wants to perform badly or make a bad performance to the fans or for the club. Nobody wants it. "When they are in front of 60,000 people they want to perform well. But for many reasons, it hurts." Guardiola has vowed to find a solution to City's problems but with a crucial trip to Liverpool next weekend following Tuesday's Champions League encounter with Dutch side Feyenoord, it is not clear how he will achieve it. The twin absences of Ballon d'Or winner Rodri and Croatia midfielder Mateo Kovacic mean City's injury-hit defence has been exposed to too many attacks. On Saturday, Tottenham arrived with a gameplan to get the ball wide to Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski as quickly as possible in an effort to isolate City's full-backs and put the central positions under strain. Kulusevski said he was looking forward to the challenge more than any other game this season and the outcome represented "the best result ever in my career". For City, the experience was more depressing. "At the moment we are not solid enough, that is the truth," added Guardiola. "I will not say a word that my time is not good but I have been there as a football player. They are not, 'hey it doesn't matter'. You want to do well but you have doubts." Consolation for Guardiola comes from the belief his side are playing well for extended periods within games. Against Tottenham, he felt the outcome would have been vastly different had Erling Haaland taken one of the two early chances that came his way. He will also hope John Stones, who was limited to 45 minutes at the weekend, will be in better shape for the Liverpool trip and both Manuel Akanji and Nathan Ake are fitter to allow some options in central defence, which in turn will give Kyle Walker and Josko Gvardiol more confidence after personally disappointing displays against Spurs. It is fair to assume someone as relentless and driven as Guardiola will not be paying lip service to his overall assessment of the situation. "When we started to lose, I said to people, 'we have to find a way'," he said. "That is my duty. "Sometimes you don't have it for many reasons, so which players at our disposal are better than the other ones? Lets' go to try and do it with them."McGregor must pay $250K to woman who says he raped her, civil jury rules
Elizabeth Arden's Red Door perfume that 'lasts all day' now £21 down from £65 in better than Black Friday dealArsenal moved into second place in the Premier League table with a 1-0 win over Ipswich at the Emirates. In their final fixture of 2024, Kai Havertz scored the only goal of the game midway through the opening period. Arsenal’s victory takes them back to within six points of leaders Liverpool, having played one match more than the Reds, and a point clear of Chelsea following their Boxing Day defeat to Fulham. Ipswich, although much improved in the second half, have now lost five of their last six games, and remain just one place off the bottom of the table, three points away from safety. Mikel Arteta’s men have been rocked by Bukayo Saka’s hamstring injury which could keep the England winger, who has nine goals and 13 assists this season, out of action for the next two months. Gabriel Martinelli was handed the unenviable task of filling Saka’s shoes on Arsenal’s right-hand side and the Brazilian was involved in the only goal of the evening. The Ipswich defence failed to deal with Martinelli’s cross, with the ball falling to Leandro Trossard on the opposite side of the area. Trossard fought his way to the byline before fizzing his cross into the box for Havertz to convert from a matter of yards. It was Havertz’s third goal in four matches, his 12th of the season, and no less than the hosts, who at that stage of the match had enjoyed a staggering 91.4 per cent of the possession, deserved. Heading into Friday’s fixture, Arsenal had lost only one of their last 75 Premier League games when they had opened the scoring, and their triumph here rarely looked in doubt following Havertz’s strike. Havertz thought he had doubled Arsenal’s lead with 34 minutes gone when he converted Gabriel Jesus’ cross. But Jesus – handed his third successive start for the first time in a year – strayed into an offside position in the build-up. When referee Darren England blew for half-time, Ipswich had failed to touch the ball in Arsenal’s box, becoming just the second side to do so in the Premier League this season. Nottingham Forest were the other, away at Liverpool, before they went on to inflict Arne Slot’s sole defeat of his tenure so far. And for all of Arsenal’s possession, while they held just a one-goal advantage, Ipswich knew they were still in the game. An encouraging start to the second half for the Tractor Boys ensued, albeit without testing David Raya in the Arsenal goal. Shortly after the hour mark, Gabriel should have settled any growing Emirates nerves when he arrived unmarked to Declan Rice’s corner, but the defender headed wide of Arijanet Muric’s post when it looked easier to score. Martin Odegaard then forced a fine fingertip save from Muric at his near post after a mazy run and shot from the Arsenal skipper. Rice’s stinging goal-bound volley from the following corner was blocked by Dara O’Shea as Arsenal pushed for a game-killing second. Havertz should have tapped home Trossard’s header but he fluffed his lines. And moments later, substitute Mikel Merino’s effort was diverted from danger by a diving Muric. Ipswich looked to catch Arsenal on the counter, but the match ended without them registering a single effort on Raya’s goal. Ipswich fans goaded their opponents with chants of “boring, boring Arsenal”, but it was the Gunners who enjoyed the last laugh as they saw out 2024 with a win which keeps the pressure on Liverpool.Far-right conservative Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene shared her opinion on the ongoing debate about the H-1B, a visa class for specialized workers, on social media. "Go apply for a job and replace the H1-B visa holders and all the other skilled labor jobs that foreign workers are taking and American companies are desperately trying to hire," Greene posted. "It's called building a career, you work your way up." Why It Matters Greene said she came back from her "Christmas bliss" to see the "MAGA split" over H-1B "imported labor" and American workers. She spoke about her time owning a construction company and how she saw the "workforce issues." "However, I fully believe we must make the hard and necessary changes here in the U.S. to educate, build, and facilitate a solid foundation of knowledgeable, highly skilled, talented, well paid, AMERICAN workers," Greene said. She said the lack of American workers is "like having a crumbling foundation in our house." "Currently we are importing foreigners to hold up the foundation walls and plug the leaks," she said. "In order to go forward we must change our education system, create a culture that respects hard work and productivity, cut government waste/spending/regulations in order to produce a healthy robust economy that lowers inflation and pays higher wages to an American workforce, so that H1-B is no longer needed and can be done away with." Greene called for a change to refocus on "America FIRST." "This requires everyone's help to change it and we will all have to do what it takes to get it done," she wrote. "It won't be easy and it won't be as quick as we like, but we can do it TOGETHER and the results will MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN but EVEN BETTER THAN BEFORE!!!" What To Know Greene is a longtime MAGA supporter, even suggesting in 2022 that there should be a "MAGA month." She has frequently attended or participated in rallies against the federal government, Muslims and transgender people. Greene is one of President-elect Donald Trump 's most hardcore allies. Most recently she called for the release of "the congressional sexual slush fund list ," backed the consideration of Elon Musk as speaker of the House , and promoted conspiracies around drones in New Jersey. Discussions around the H-1B visa program have intensified over the recent days as some within Trump's close circle have been advocating for removing country-specific caps on green cards to address backlogs faced by applicants from countries including India. The debate started on Sunday after Trump named venture capitalist Sriram Krishnan as his artificial intelligence (AI) policy adviser. Laura Loomer , a Trump loyalist and far-right activist with a history of racially motivated comments, criticized the appointment as "deeply disturbing." She faced backlash and responded to a post that said the nation was built by "immigrants who drove innovation" by noting that the United States "was built by white Europeans" and "not third-world invaders from India." Musk, the world's richest man who benefited from the H-1B program, wrote in a response to a post on his social media platform X on Wednesday that there are not enough "super talented" and "super motivated" engineers in the U.S. Musk has continued to defend his argument, calling out Loomer for "trolling for attention." On Friday, War Room podcast host Steve Bannon , a fervent MAGA supporter, called out Musk for showing his "true colors." What People Are Saying Bannon in a post to Getrr: "H1B Visa Program Should be Zeroed-Out —Used to Constantly Drive Wages Down and Replace American Tech Workers —the Foreign Worker Replacements are Treated Like Indentured Servants." Democratic Representative Jasmine Crockett of Texas, on X: "I've done countless interviews explaining that we need immigrants and that they contribute to our economy! Businesses blow us up about needing workers. And what do ya know?! MAGA got played & is mad at who?! The same 2 guys that they were just yelling was looking out for them last week as the government was on the verge of a shutdown!" Economics commentator Jason Harrison, on X: "People on tech twitter are actually shocked that some of their mutuals aren't 'only for legal immigration' and just straight up racist LMAO." What Happens Next It is still unclear what will happen—if anything—around the H-1B visa program when Trump takes office.
