When Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto returned to Pakistan on October 18, 2007, the entire nation seemed to converge at Karachi airport to welcome her. A sea of people gathered in support of her vision for a peaceful democratic revolution, echoing her belief that Pakistan's survival lay in democracy. The overwhelming support unsettled the forces opposed to Pakistan and its people. On the same day, these hostile forces struck their first blow against Shaheed Bibi through a brutal terrorist attack on Shahra-e-Faisal near Karsaz, Karachi. Although she survived the devastating bomb blasts, more than 200 of her supporters sacrificed their lives for the cause of Pakistan's survival and the restoration of democracy. The Karsaz tragedy made it evident that Shaheed Bibi's life was under constant threat from those opposing her mission. On October 19, during a press conference at Bilawal House in Karachi, she was asked if she would continue her campaign despite the threats. Her resolute reply was: "Those forces want me to abandon my campaign and leave. They do not want true democracy to be restored in the country. But if democracy is not restored, the dangers to Pakistan will only increase. I will stay with my people." Upon her return to Pakistan, Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto brought with her a manuscript she had written, later published under the title Reconciliation. In one poignant passage, she wrote: "I had endured the torment of my father's arrest, imprisonment, and murder and knew that such wounds of the soul never truly heal. I was willing to do anything to spare my children the pain I had suffered from my father's death, but this was the one thing I could not do." By restoring democracy, she countered the threats posed by extremist and separatist forces that endangered the nation's security. Under authoritarian regimes, Pakistan faced significant challenges: the country was divided during the dictatorships of General Ayub Khan and General Yahya Khan, while the regimes of Zia-ul-Haq and Pervez Musharraf embroiled Pakistan in global power struggles. These wars crushed democratic and federalist forces, allowing extremist and separatist movements to gain strength. On April 10, 1986, when Shaheed Bibi first returned to Pakistan, and again on October 18, 2007, the country's security was in jeopardy. In 2007, religious and sectarian extremist forces dominated politics through terrorism, and the government's writ had eroded in regions like Swat and the tribal areas, where even the Pakistani flag could not be raised. Despite these risks, Shaheed Bibi returned to her homeland, risking her life to confront these challenges head-on. If she had not returned during those critical times, the situation in Pakistan today might have been unimaginable. Susan DziubinskiPresident-elect Donald Trump settled a lawsuit this week with singer Eddy Grant, who alleged Trump and his campaign team violated copyright law when they used his hit song “Electric Avenue” in a video mocking President Joe Biden . The lawsuit , filed in the Southern District of New York in 2020, stemmed from a 55-second low-fidelity animated video posted on one of Trump’s social media accounts that same year, as Trump was campaigning against Biden. The video depicts a red train labeled “Trump Pence KAGA 2020” speeding along railroad tracks, followed by an animated Biden pushing himself along in a handcar, as “Electric Avenue plays.” According to the lawsuit’s complaint, the video was viewed more than 13.7 million times and garnered thousands of likes on the website known then as Twitter. Grant’s lawyers claimed that Trump and his campaign had financially and politically benefitted from the video, which used Grant’s music without permission. In a statement following a cease and desist letter, Grant said, “I call upon such arbiter, as is responsible for this sordid abuse, to come forward like a man and let’s sort this thing out, in the way that America demands when such issues are to be sorted, especially when they are wrong,” CNN reported in 2020. The 1983 hit, which made Grant one of the first Black artists to be played on MTV, is named after Electric Avenue in South London’s Brixton, and it was written after riots against over-policing of Black residents. Breaching KYC data confidentiality regulations will result in severe penalties, including a minimum two-year prison sentence and a fine of at least AED 50,000. Planned Parenthood is preparing to face off with Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency after it identified the reproductive health provider as fat to be trimmed. Musk and his co-lead, former GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, have been laying out their plans for their federal budget-trimming effort in recent weeks. Musk and Ramaswamy said in an op-ed this week that they are eying everything from "$1.5 billion for grants to international organizations to nearly $300 million to progressive groups like Planned Parenthood." In response, Alexis McGill Johnson, the president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, referred to Musk, Ramaswamy, and others President-election Donald Trump has nominated for leadership positions after his election as "unqualified fanboys and agents of chaos." "Musk and Ramaswamy are making clear how they intend to use their power: denying people care and wreaking havoc on our public health system, of which Planned Parenthood is an integral part — all in the name of supposed 'government efficiency,'" McGill Johnson said. "We've been here before — we are not new to shutdown and 'defund' fights. We fended off a number of these attacks during Trump's first term — and Planned Parenthood health centers are still there serving millions of patients across the nation." In a press release, the organization said its health centers saw a surge in appointments following Trump's reelection, including a 1,200% increase in vasectomy appointments and a 760% in IUD appointments. Wisp, an online provider of reproductive health products and prescriptions, said it has also seen increased demand after the election, including a 1,000% increase in emergency contraception sales . Planned Parenthood said in the press release that more than half of the patients who go to its health centers rely on Medicaid and other government programs for the uninsured. "Like any other healthcare provider or hospital, Planned Parenthood affiliates are reimbursed for services provided to patients at health centers. What Musk and Ramaswamy call 'federal overspending' provides critical and necessary sexual and reproductive healthcare to thousands of people every day — care that will disappear if they get their way," McGill Johnson said. While Musk and Ramaswamy have been busy making plans to cut federal spending, the new department doesn't exist yet and has been given no official power. Douglas Holtz-Eakin, the former director of the Congressional Budget Office, told Business Insider that, as of now, DOGE has no authority granted to it by Congress or the president. "It's somebody's idea of a fantasy, but it's not a real thing so far. It has a name, two supposed heads, it has no staff and most importantly, it has no authorities," Holtz-Eakin told BI. "So it's essentially an extremely highly publicized think tank that's going to collect some ideas for the Office of Management and Budget."

We got to experience first hand the automakers most recent efforts with our 2024 Toyota Tacoma review , and walked away impressed by improvements from previous models in ride, performance, and interior quality. The first year the Tacoma was launched, there were a few engine options, including the 3.4-liter V6 engine. The automaker pulled it out of its full-size T100 truck at the time. With dual overhead cams, multi-valve cylinders, and a peppy four-speed automatic transmission, the Tacoma SR5 V6 could produce 190 horsepower, and 220 lb-ft of torque. The six-cylinder in the '95 Tacoma was capable enough to offer 1,670 pounds of payload, and up to 5,000 pounds of towing capacity, which outperformed the Nissan Truck SE V6 from the same year, that could only muster 3,500 pounds of towing power. While these first-generation Tacoma's topped out just under 200 horsepower, 1998 saw the release of the Tacoma TRD off-road package, which enhanced performance by adding a locking rear differential, but would add even more powerful options moving forward. For those unaware, TRD is one of several famous car badges that hold special meaning . The third-generation of Tacoma kicked off in 2016 and offered a slightly larger V6 than the first-generation, but packed with even more power than the stock second-generation 4.0-liter V6. Offering a respectable 278 horses and 265-pound feet of torque under the hood, this six-cylinder boosted towing capacity to 6,400 pounds. In fact, this more potent V6 even outperforms the previous generation's larger 4.0-liter. Another interesting aspect of Toyota's 3.5-liter was that it could operate on the Atkinson cycle, which provided enhancements to efficiency. James Atkinson, a 19th-century engineer, developed a unique combustion sequence which allowed the intake valve to remain open longer. During the compression stroke, the piston reached a higher point, traveling upward before the intake valve would close. Essentially, the power stroke, which moves the piston, was longer than the movement of the intake stroke, allowing for less fuel to be consumed every cycle. Of course, the modern Tacoma utilizes a much more precise version of this concept with variable valve timing. When Tacoma's second-generation launched in 2005, the lineup received an option for more displacement in the form of a 4.0-liter V6. While this six-cylinder could outperform previous Tacoma's with the ability to generate 236 horsepower (an improvement of 46 horsepower) and 266 lb-ft of torque (additional 46-pound feet of torque), it wasn't the most muscular option available from Toyota. While the TRD off-road package had offered some performance increases in previous Tacoma's, the available 2015 TRD supercharger engine package took this truck to the next level. The different types of superchargers are twin screw, roots, and centrifugal and each have their benefits. But, regardless of which design you use, the end product is more power. The Tacoma TRD supercharger bumped up horsepower to 304, and torque up to 334 lb-ft. This extra output translated into 0-60 mph times of less than 7.5 seconds. However, as you'd expect, fuel economy did take quite a hit with the factory installed supercharger, only managing around 15 mpg. Toyota arrived in 2024 ready to upset the status quo by kicking off Tacoma's fourth generation with the most powerful powertrain this truck has seen to date. This hybrid engine consists of two elements: A 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder alongside an electric motor, combining to output performance figures that surpass even the TRD supercharger from 2015. Together, the turbocharged gasoline engine and electric motor produce 326 horsepower and an impressive 465 lb-ft of torque. Essentially, when compared to previous V6 iterations of Tacoma, this new hybrid generates around 75% more torque. When explaining the difference between horsepower and torque , in the world of pickup trucks the latter is king, and translates into a Tacoma towing capacity of 6,000 pounds.
