Sometimes, it takes a village to put out a newspaper. Kent Brooks, owner of the 137-year-old Plainsman Herald down in the southeast corner of Colorado, was ready to call it quits a few months ago, given the tough economics of publishing a rural paper these days. But at the last minute Brooks decided to survey his readers before ceasing publication to see if they would pay more to keep the Plainsman in business. Ninety-five percent of them said yes, with many willing to pay double. Readers began calling, sending emails and mailing handwritten letters and notes begging him to keep on keeping on. “Heck, they wanted to do bake sales,” he told my former colleague Kevin Simpson, who first wrote about the effort to save the paper for The Colorado Sun. The Washington Post has also picked up on the story now. "I guess when over 2,000 print newspapers have gone away in the past few years, it is a feel good story when one decides to keep on rolling," Brooks told me. Residents of Springfield also told him they’d be willing to sponsor various features in the paper. Brooks said he’s in the process now of nailing down sponsors for Kerry Sherman’s sports page, the popular Hooves ‘n Horns section and Dawni O’Bryan’s Happy Trails articles. He’s also sent out notices doubling the annual subscription from $50 to $100. Brooks also has been seeking contractors and volunteers to step in now that his daughter, Lexi, who has been helping for four years, is headed back to college, and his son, Colin, who did technical work for the Plainsman, has started working full-time as an apprentice electrician. “We have a lady who does a garden blog for us, who taught at Springfield High School,” Brooks noted. “I’ve got a lady who lives on a ranch near the border of Western Baca County. She’s our Western bureau.” Brooks has two cowboy poets who contribute to the paper, including Bill Bunting, whose family still runs a ranch on the high plains of southeastern Colorado that his granddaddy homesteaded. Brooks also runs some history pieces from books he’s penned on the Dust Bowl and from “Letters from Colorado,” a collection of missives written by Colorado pioneers to the folks they left behind, back where they came from. A friend’s grandson is on the high school wrestling team and has agreed to write stories and take pictures of the team’s exploits this winter. Brooks also has a community feed on his website for locals to submit photos, articles, coverage of events, obits, etc. ... “And ask your friends and neighbors to do the same,” Brooks suggests on his site. Additional duties will also fall now to longtime employee Hunter Babbitt, who also oversees the flower shop that doubles as the Plainsman's Main Street office. The Knight Foundation also helped out with a grant a while back to enable Brooks to launch a website. “We’ve gotten good response from the community. It’s clear there is a strong willingness to support the Plainsman Herald,” Brooks told me. “So we’re going to give it a whirl. Now it’s either, ‘Man, this is kind of cool,’ or 'I’m an idiot.'” Brooks isn’t the only one making a last stand these days: • Tom Bredehoft, a 62-year-old businessman, came to the rescue of the Burlington Record a few months ago after Prairie Mountain Media announced it was shutting it down. Bredehoft, who lives 45 miles down Interstate 70 in Flagler, saw the paper as a good business opportunity but also thought it was something that just needed to be done. “I still believe in community newspapers,” Bredehoft told Simpson, “and I think there will always be people who want to be able to cut the clippings out of the paper. People want to read the sports scores. People want to clip their kids’ pictures. I just believe there’s always going to be a need and a want, and I think there’s people that will support it.” • The National Trust for Local News has stepped in to help 65 publications around the country, including 23 in Colorado. The nonprofit Trust now has 500 employees, 100,000 paying subscribers, 300,000 print copies distributed per month, $50 million in earned revenue and 2.5 million unique monthly visitors. In other words, they've proven that local news can succeed if its truly local, mission-driven and dedicated to community. The chains like Alden Global Capital, owners of Prairie Mountain, and Gannett are the ones who were screwing up local news, not the locals. The Trust went even further recently and purchased a community press in Colorado to help community newspapers after Prairie Mountain shut down their press in Berthoud and Gannett Newspapers shut down theirs in Pueblo. The Trust has raised $38 million in philanthropic support, Poynter reported in July. But the goal of the National Trust is to bootstrap community news organizations so they can eventually stand on their on and not rely on institutional philanthropy. Board member Marcus Brauchli told me the Trust “has been raising funds to operate small-town papers whose owners want to move on, on the theory that well-operated local news can survive if it doesn't have to return capital to its owners or pay down debt. So it basically takes the cost of capital out of the equation by taking ownership and then offering help in the form of technology and other services that allow the local news company to operate more efficiently and serve its community more effectively.” There are other heroic efforts afoot out there to save local news: • The American Journalism Project recently committed $3.6 million to nonprofit newsrooms like Outlier Media and The Nevada Independent, supporting investigative reporting and operational sustainability. • The Press Forward Initiative distributed $20 million across 205 local outlets, funding initiatives to deepen local coverage and enhance newsroom operations. • Midwestern News Nonprofit Support provided funding for print-focused initiatives, such as the launch of The Midcoast Villager, which addresses gaps in local reporting for communities in Maine. • The Daily Iowan, the University of Iowa’s independent student newspaper, just purchased two weekly local newspapers in the state to give their students a place to hone their craft. What all these efforts have in common is the mission of putting community back in community journalism. “Small-j journalism, which we just call community journalism, may not be at the top of the Pulitzer list every year, but it sure does build a lot of trust,” Ross McDuffie, the first-ever chief portfolio officer for the National Trust for Local News, told the Nieman Lab recently. “I think that if you want your audience to pay attention when you’re holding the powerful accountable, or you’re giving a voice to the voiceless, or you’re shining a light in dark corners, then you sure as hell better show up when they’re celebrating things that are going well in their community, or, God forbid, they’re mourning a shared tragedy.” Brooks said something similar to his readers when he was contemplating closing down. “This newspaper has been a cornerstone of local life for generations, providing news and a sense of connection," he wrote. "However, the realities of modern publishing demand innovation and collaboration to sustain this vital resource for the future. A great deal of community support is needed to carry on.” It takes a village to put out a newspaper now, in other words. Idowu Abdullahi The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate, has disclosed that the Federal Government will increase domestic health financing to improve healthcare delivery. Speaking on Tuesday in Abuja at the Nigerian Medical Association’s Third National Health Summit, Pate said inadequate funding had negatively impacted Nigeria’s health sector’s performance. “Health sector financing has been inadequate and inefficient for a long time, with significant challenges in mobilizing funds and ensuring financial protection for much of the population,” the minister said. He, however, disclosed that by 2025, domestic health financing at the federal level would increase. The minister stated the issue of uneven distribution of healthcare professionals, noting that nearly 40% of registered physicians are concentrated in the Federal Capital Territory and Lagos. “Addressing these challenges requires not just policy formulation but effective implementation,” he said. The minister explained that policies work when a clearly identified problem, solution and the opportunity align. “The real challenge lies in executing them effectively. Often, the timing and opportunities for implementation are not optimal,” Pate said. The minister also commended the NMA for fostering peace and harmony in the sector, which he described as essential for building a robust healthcare system. “While challenges remain and the country faces difficult times, we believe that with determination, sincerity, and a focus on patient-centred care, we can overcome these issues,” he said. On his part, the NMA President, Prof. Bala Audu, stressed the need to develop Nigeria’s medical and pharmaceutical ecosystem to produce at least 70 percent of the country’s healthcare requirements, including medications and equipment. “To achieve this, we need a sector-wide approach that brings all stakeholders together under a unified framework to drive progress,” he added. This culture of innovation, supported by incubators, accelerators, and robust mentoring networks, has fostered a unique ecosystem that connects grassroots challenges with cutting-edge solutions. Recognising the transformative potential of startups, the Indian government has introduced several initiatives to support and nurture entrepreneurship. The flagship Startup India programme, launched in 2016, has been a cornerstone of this effort. As of December 25, 2024, 157,066 startups have been recognised by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), with 759,303 users registered on the portal. The government has launched ambitious programmes to support the startup ecosystem through ease of doing business, tax benefits, funding support, sector-specific policies, and the Bharat Startup Knowledge Access Registry (BHASKAR) platform. Additionally, initiatives such as the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) and the National Initiative for Developing and Harnessing Innovations (NIDHI) provide infrastructure and financial support to innovators. The Startup Accelerator of MeitY for Product Innovation, Development, and Growth (SAMRIDH) scheme, launched in 2021, aims to support 300 software product startups over four years with an outlay of Rs 99 crore, offering funding of up to Rs 40 lakh per startup through accelerators to scale their businesses. Highlighting the success of new-age companies such as Byju's, Zomato, Ola, and Nykaa, the ministry noted that these startups have expanded their operations globally, showcasing India's ability to scale and compete on the world stage. The success of Indian-origin startups in Silicon Valley further underscores the country's global influence, the ministry added. According to the Startup India International Guide, Indian startups are increasingly partnering with global corporations and entering international markets. India's leadership in affordable technology solutions, such as UPI and aadhaar-enabled services, is inspiring similar innovations globally, the ministry added. Two years later, the IMF forecasted that copper demand will rise by over 66% from 2020 to 2040 as the world transitions away from oil. Rising copper demand Copper is critical for a wide range of applications, including the electrical grid, electric vehicles (EVs), and renewable energy technologies. Beyond clean energy, copper is also extensively used in industries such as construction, infrastructure, and defense due to its unique properties. As a result, global copper demand is projected to grow from 25.9 million tonnes in 2023 to 39.1 million tonnes by 2040 under a net-zero emissions scenario that limits average temperature increases to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. Much of this growth is expected to come from the EV industry. Many components of battery electric vehicles rely on copper. On average, a standard EV contains 60-83 kg of copper , four times more than an internal combustion engine vehicle, which typically uses 15-20 kg of copper per car. Meanwhile, oil consumption is projected to decrease, dropping from 101.9 million barrels per day in 2023 to 66 million barrels per day by 2040. The decline in oil use is driven by global efforts to reduce carbon emissions and the growing adoption of renewable energy. Additionally, improvements in energy efficiency and policy regulations are further curbing oil demand.

He is then accused of digitally raping her through her stockings while she drove him home . The man has pleaded not guilty to sexual intercourse without consent and committing an act of indecency without consent. He also denies an alternate count of committing an act of indecency without consent. Giving evidence in his ACT Supreme Court jury trial on Friday, he denied raping the woman and claimed that when she was driving, he "reached over and grabbed the [vape] on her lap and then puffed out the window". He said, "It was a bad decision to get a lift home", stating she was intoxicated at the time. The man told jurors that earlier on the night in question, he was at a bar with the woman when she confided "she was a bit insecure about her body". He said they discussed "double standards" for men and women in society before he asked: "You want me to touch your tits?" The man claimed she had replied: "Go for it." He told jurors he then consensually touched her breasts. "We just both laughed about it," he said. The man leaves court on a previous occasion. "I'm well aware that if I go to a pub, there is always something ... especially at work parties," she said. Giving evidence, she described the alleged rape as having occurred while she was driving the "drunk" man to his home. "I remember the lights turning red, and as I'm slowing down, I felt [him] reaching across," she told the jury. "He is licking my neck, and he is reaching over, and he has a hand up my dress. "My hand was busy changing gear, my foot was busy [on the clutch], and I was busy trying not to crash my car." The woman stated she "couldn't do anything" because she was "otherwise occupied" and had "swerved my car a little bit". The trial before Justice Louise Taylor continues. Almost six months after European elections that bolstered the political right, the team of top officials that will lead the next European Commission until 2029 looks on track to take office on December 1. The three major centrist political groups in the European Parliament announced a deal to approve the entire 27-strong lineup on Wednesday night after weeks of grappling, pledging in a joint statement to "work together with a constructive approach." With burning questions about the climate and migration on the table, it is the center-right European People's Party (EPP) group that seems to have most strengthened its hand. "I promised people a [...] Europe without bureaucracy and I will deliver. And if I do not deliver, then we will wake up in 2029 in an extremely populistic Europe," EPP head Manfred Weber said in comments reported by the Financial Times. Led by President Ursula von der Leyen , herself a German EPP politician who was approved for a second term at the helm of the EU executive branch in July, the European Commission's team of 27 officials will guide the EU's climate, trade and migration policy. Italy's Fitto, Spain's Ribera clear final hurdles Under the EU's complicated division of powers, each member state gets to nominate a candidate to send to the powerful commission, but it's up to von der Leyen as president to assign portfolios, at which point the European Parliament approves the candidate. Before giving that blessing, however, EU parliamentarians spent the past several weeks grilling the 26 remaining candidates. In the end, the two that faced the biggest resistance were Teresa Ribera, a Spanish Socialist from the EU's S&D group, and Raffaele Fitto, an Italian from the far-right European Conservative and Reformists (ECR) group. Ribera, Spain's outgoing environment minister, faced resistance from the Spanish contingent of the EPP over her and the government's handling of recent disastrous floods in Valencia . Fitto's nomination as an executive vice president of the European Commission was considered unacceptable for many on the left, and even controversial within the S&D group. Many bristled at the thought of having a member of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's Brothers of Italy party , with its neofascist roots, in such a position. Socialists accused of 'breaking promises' In the end, both nominees got a thumbs-up from EPP and S&D leaders, putting them in a good position ahead of a broader vote in the European Parliament next week. Ribera's compatriot and S&D group leader Iratxe Garcia defended the deal. "This agreement unblocks a situation that was putting the European Union's stability at risk," she said in a statement on Wednesday. Sidelined from the deal altogether were the Greens, who fared poorly in the June polls while the far-right Patriots for Europe and right-wing European Conservatives and Reformists made gains. It's unclear whether the Greens will sign off on the appointments when they come up for a vote. "The Social Democrats are breaking a core campaign promise — they are siding with the far right to support commissioner candidates from Hungary and Italy," Daniel Freund, a Green lawmaker from Germany, told DW. In Budapest, far-right Prime Minister Viktor Orban of the Patriots for Europe group renominated incumbent European Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi, who had his health portfolio trimmed slightly to remove reproductive rights issues. A contentious figure, Varhelyi, too, made it over the line. A more right-wing EU Commission? While the Greens may accuse the Socialists of enabling the far right, according to Eric Maurice of the European Policy Centre, an independent think tank, this new college of European commissioners (as the entire 27-person team is known) isn't significantly more right-wing than its predecessor — at least not in terms of the balance of commissioners. Over the past year, right-wing parties have become more powerful in many European capitals, said the analyst, so "it's not a surprise that this is reflected in the composition of the Commission." "There is a backlash from industry, there is a backlash in public opinion , which is reflected in the bad results of the Greens in different countries and by the shifting of the position of some parties, mainly the center-right parties, or even some liberal parties," Maurice told DW. Indeed, the EPP has emerged as kingmaker in a more politically fragmented parliament, he argued, and will be able to team up with forces to its political left and right. Challenges on the horizon In 2019, during the first 100 days of her first term in office, von der Leyen unveiled major environmental policy aims. This time around, she is set to lay out a new concept for agriculture policy and present new ideas for defense in an increasingly precarious geopolitical environment.
