Toronto gave up a franchise-worst 155 points in Thursday’s loss at Memphis. Young shot 7 for 13 from 3-point range, singlehandedly making as many shots from distance than the entire Raptors team, who combined to go 7 for 24. Toronto’s Bruce Brown made his season debut after sitting out the first 31 games recovering from right knee surgery. From British rule in India to cinema actors turning politicians, the predictions of Potuluri Veera Brahmendra Swamy have intrigued generations. Known for his remarkable foresight, Brahmendra Swamy authored the Kalagnanam, a book containing over 14,000 prophecies in Telugu poetry, offering a glimpse into the future of the world. While modern technology enables us to predict natural disasters like cyclones and famines, Brahmendra Swamy’s predictions continue to captivate us with their uncanny accuracy. Here are the 20 predictions by Potuluri Veera Brahmendra Swamy that came true. World Wars and Disasters - Brahmendra Swamy predicted that the 5000 years of Kaliyuga would be marked by devastating events, including natural disasters and wars. The 1939-1945 World War II and the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, which killed over 230,000 people, align with his predictions of massive destruction. British Rule in India - Swamy’s prophecy about "fair-faced people" ruling India came true with the British colonization, where the British controlled India for nearly 200 years. A Woman Would Rule for 16 Years - He predicted that a woman would rule for 16 years, which matches the tenure of Indira Gandhi, India’s first female Prime Minister, who ruled from 1966-1977 and again from 1980-1984. The Advent of Automobiles - The "non-living vehicles" predicted by Swamy refer to the invention of cars, trains, and planes, which revolutionized transportation. Electricity and Hydroelectric Power - He foresaw that "lamps would be lit with water," symbolizing the development of electricity and hydroelectric power, where water is used to generate energy. Fraudulent Gurus - Swamy predicted that genuine spiritual teachers would be rare, and fraudulent ones would be plentiful. This reflects the rise of self-proclaimed gurus today. End of Monarchies, Rise of Democracy - He predicted that traditional monarchies would end, and democracies would rise. This is seen in India after independence in 1947 when democracy replaced monarchy. San Francisco Earthquake - Swamy predicted a huge earthquake in San Francisco, which occurred in 1906, causing significant destruction. Cinema Actors Turned Politicians - Swamy’s prediction that "images on the screen would rule countries" has come true with film stars like N.T. Rama Rao, M.G. Ramachandran, and Arnold Schwarzenegger entering politics. Global Mobility - Swamy predicted that people would move constantly for work or other reasons, which is true in today’s globalized world. Decline in Social Morality - Swamy predicted that immoral actions, like the sale of children and increased affairs, would become common. These issues are being reported more today. Rise of Cruel Husbands - He predicted the rise of cruel husbands who treat their wives poorly. Unfortunately, this is seen in many instances of domestic violence today. Religious Conflicts - Swamy warned that conflicts based on religion would harm humanity, which is evident in ongoing religious extremism and terrorism. Rising Oceans and Global Warming - Swamy’s prophecy about rising oceans swallowing cities aligns with today’s fears of global warming and rising sea levels. Foreigners in Power and New Education Systems - Swamy predicted that foreigners would rule and bring a new education system. This happened with British colonial rule, which introduced Western education systems in India. Extinction of Wild Animals - Swamy foresaw the extinction of wild animals like lions due to poaching and habitat destruction, with many species now endangered.Selling of Merit - Swamy predicted that people would prioritize money over merit, seen today in education where management quotas and donations often replace merit-based admissions. Musi River Flood in Hyderabad - Swamy predicted the Musi River flood in Hyderabad, which happened in 1908, causing widespread destruction. Adulteration of Goods - He foresaw widespread adulteration of food and goods, which is a common issue today with fake products and compromised quality. The Birth of Gandhi - Swamy’s mention of a great soul named "Gandhi" refers to Mahatma Gandhi, who led India to independence through non-violence. Chuck Woolery Dies: Former ‘Wheel of Fortune’ and ‘Love Connection’ Host Was 83

Jimmy Carter, the 39th US president, has died at 100 ATLANTA (AP) — Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter has died. He was 100 years old and had spent more than a year in hospice care. The Georgia peanut farmer served one turbulent term in the White House before building a reputation as a global humanitarian and champion of democracy. He defeated President Gerald Ford in 1976 promising to restore trust in government but lost to Ronald Reagan four years later amid soaring inflation, gas station lines and the Iran hostage crisis. He and his wife Rosalynn then formed The Carter Center, and he earned a Nobel Peace Prize while making himself the most internationally engaged of former presidents. The Carter Center said he died peacefully Sunday afternoon in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by his family. Jimmy Carter: Many evolutions for a centenarian ‘citizen of the world’ PLAINS, Ga. (AP) — The 39th and longest-lived U.S. president, James Earl Carter Jr., died Sunday at the age of 100. His life ended where it began, in Plains, Georgia. He left and returned to the tiny town many times as he climbed to the nation’s highest office and lost it after four tumultuous years. Carter spent the next 40 years setting new standards for what a former president can do. Carter wrote nearly a decade ago that he found all the phases of his life challenging but also successful and enjoyable. The Democrat's principled but pragmatic approach defied American political labels, especially the idea that one-term presidents are failures. Jetliner skids off runway and bursts into flames while landing in South Korea, killing 179 SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A jetliner skidded off a runway, slammed into a concrete fence and burst into flames in South Korea after its landing gear apparently failed to deploy. Officials said all but two of the 181 people on board were killed Sunday in one of the country’s worst aviation disasters. The 737-800 operated by Jeju Air plane arrived from Bangkok and crashed while attempting to land in the town of Muan, about 290 kilometers (180 miles) south of Seoul. Footage of the crash aired by South Korean television channels showed the plane skidding across the airstrip at high speed, evidently with its landing gear still closed. Tornadoes in Texas and Mississippi kill 2 and injure 6 as severe weather system moves east HOUSTON (AP) — A strong storm system is threatening to whip up tornadoes in parts of the U.S. Southeast, a day after severe weather claimed at least two lives as twisters touched down in Texas and Mississippi. Strong storms moving eastward Sunday are expected to continue producing gusty, damaging winds, hail and tornadoes through Sunday. That is according to National Weather Service meteorologist Frank Pereira. So far, the line of severe weather has led to about 40 tornado reports from southeastern Texas to Alabama, Pereira said, but those reports remain unconfirmed until surveys of damage are completed. Israeli hospital says Netanyahu has undergone successful prostate surgery TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — An Israeli hospital says Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has undergone successful prostate surgery. Jerusalem’s Hadassah Medical Center said his prostate was removed late Sunday and that he was recovering. Netanyahu’s office had said Justice Minister Yariv Levin, a close ally, would serve as acting prime minister during the procedure. Doctors ordered the operation after detecting an infection last week. Netanyahu is expected to remain hospitalized for several days. With so much at stake, Netanyahu’s health in wartime is a concern for both Israelis and the wider world. Syria's de facto leader says it could take up to 4 years to hold elections BEIRUT (AP) — Syria’s de facto leader has said it could take up to four years to hold elections in Syria, and that he plans on dissolving his Islamist group that led the country’s insurgency at an anticipated national dialogue summit for the country. Ahmad al-Sharaa, who leads Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the group leading the new authority in Syria, made the remarks in an interview Sunday. That's according to the Saudi television network Al-Arabiyya. It comes almost a month after a lightning insurgency led by HTS overthrew President Bashar Assad’s decades-long rule, ending the country’s uprising-turned civil war that started back in 2011. A fourth infant dies of the winter cold in Gaza as families share blankets in seaside tents DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — A fourth infant has died of hypothermia in Gaza, where hundreds of thousands of Palestinians displaced by nearly 15 months of war are huddled in tents along the rainy, windswept coast as winter arrives. The baby's father says the 20-day-old child was found with his head as “cold as ice” Sunday morning in their tent. The baby’s twin brother was moved to the intensive care unit of Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital. Their father says the twins were born one month premature and spent just a day in hospital, which like other Gaza health centers has been overwhelmed and only partially functions. Musk causes uproar for backing Germany's far-right party ahead of key elections BERLIN (AP) — Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk has caused uproar after backing Germany’s far-right party in a major newspaper ahead of key parliamentary elections in the Western European country, leading to the resignation of the paper’s opinion editor in protest. Germany is to vote in an early election on Feb. 23 after Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s three-party governing coalition collapsed last month in a dispute over how to revitalize the country’s stagnant economy. Musk’s guest opinion piece for Welt am Sonntag, published in German over the weekend, was the second time this month he supported the Alternative for Germany, or AfD.

Speaking at an event put on by the Halifax Chamber of Commerce, Trudeau said that’s because Trump’s team is coming in with a much clearer set of ideas of what they want to do right away than after his first election win in 2016. Even still, Trudeau said the answer is not to panic and said Canada can rally together to address the tough scenario the nation will face following Trump’s inauguration in January. Trump has threatened 25 per cent tariffs against Canada and Mexico, if the two nations do not beef up their borders to his satisfaction. On the weekend, Trump appeared in an interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press,” where the president-elect said he can’t guarantee the tariffs won’t raise prices for U.S. consumers but that eventually tariffs will “make us rich.” “All I want to do is I want to have a level, fast, but fair playing field,” he said. Trudeau warned that steep tariffs could be “devastating for the Canadian economy” and cause “just horrific losses in all of our communities,” and that Trump’s approach is to introduce “a bit of chaos” to destabilize his negotiating partners. But he also said that Canada exports a range of goods to the U.S., from steel and aluminum to crude oil and agricultural commodities, all of which would get more expensive and mean real hardship for Americans at the same time. “For years, Americans have been paying more for their homes than they should because of unjust tariffs on softwood lumber. Maybe this level of tariffs will actually have them realize that this is something they are doing to themselves,” Trudeau said. “Trump got elected on a commitment to make life better and more affordable for Americans, and I think people south of the border are beginning to wake up to the real reality that tariffs on everything from Canada would make life a lot more expensive.” Experts, including Canada’s former top trade negotiator Steve Verheul, have warned the country needs to be ready to respond if Trump goes through with his tariff threats. The prime minister said his government is still mulling over “the right ways” to respond, referencing Canada’s calculated approach when Trump hit Canada with steel and aluminum tariffs. “It was the fact that we put tariffs on bourbon and Harley-Davidsons and playing cards and Heinz ketchup and cherries and a number of other things that were very carefully targeted because they were politically impactful to the president’s party and colleagues,” he said. That’s how Canada was able to “punch back in a way that was actually felt by Americans,” he added. Trudeau also said the country needs to rally together and work past its political differences. He offered up some rare words of praise for Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe — a frequent political thorn in his side and “no big fan of mine” — as one of Canada’s strongest voices during that tumultuous time period when NAFTA was under threat. “His voice with governors down south, his making the case for Canadian workers and Canadian trade in a way that complemented the arguments that we were making, did a better job of showing what Canadian unity was and (what) Canada’s negotiating position could be to a United States that has a political system that is incredibly fractured and fractious,” Trudeau said. On Sunday, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre said “every single Conservative would tell every single American” that tariffs on Canada would be a bad idea — and also took time to bill Trudeau as a weak leader. One member of his caucus, Conservative MP Jamil Jivani, said he had dinner with incoming vice-president JD Vance and British Conservative Leader Kemi Badenoch over the weekend in Arlington, Va. He said it’s crucial right now to be building “strong relationships with our allies.” — With files from The Associated Press, Kelly Geraldine Malone and Rosa Saba in Toronto

Khalil Rountree Jr. experienced a spine-tingling moment during his UFC 307 defeat to light heavyweight champ Alex Pereira. Khalil Rountree Jr.’s first bid at hoisting UFC gold got off to a great start against Alex Pereira at UFC 307. He landed heavy blows in the opening rounds, and at one point had the forward-focused Pereira fighting off his backfoot in the Octagon. After putting Pereira in significant danger in the opening minutes, Pereira poured it on as the fight progressed. He turned Rountree’s face into a horror-film-like appearance as he finished the title challenger in Round 4. Despite the vast pre-fight criticism surrounding the matchup, Rountree made himself into a household name with his performance at UFC 307. While Rountree’s timeline for a return is uncertain, he wants a former titleholder for his next fight in an attempt to get back into the title mix. The scars that Rountree suffered at UFC 307 will stick with him forever. Some question whether or not he’ll be able to return the same fighter in his next bookings after sustaining such severe damage against Pereira in the cage. As Pereira ramped up pressure on Rountree at UFC 307, the title challenger experienced a frightening moment as the light heavyweight champion pressed forward. Darren Till takes aim at Bo Nickal over historic comments about Khamzat Chimaev Alex Pereira’s power caused Khalil Rountree Jr. blindness in UFC 307 scrap In a recent appearance on the JAXXON Podcast , Rountree revealed Pereira caused him to go blind in their UFC 307 instant classic. “I got hit, and boom — I knew I had gotten hit hard because I started to see my vision kind of blur a little bit,” Rountree shared. “But the second one that landed, the one that actually split my eye, in that moment I went blind. But f*** it, I’m going to keep going. “I didn’t see anything after that, just light,” Rountree continued. “I didn’t see shadows, I didn’t see anything. It was like if someone put up a frosted film. So I can’t see, I’m f***ing blind. But whatever, I’m not going to give up. The sensation, I didn’t feel anything, the adrenaline was too high, but I realized it was there. My eye was f***ed up, but I’ll deal with it later.” ( h/t MMA Mania ) Rountree didn’t go into detail on the visual damage he sustained against Pereira at UFC 307, but he’ll likely have to undergo an operation at some point to repair his compromised eye. READ MORE: Nate Diaz teases boxing return in chilling post just days after Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson Khalil Rountree Jr. underwent extensive surgery after Alex Pereira fight Before UFC 307, Rountree earned the title shot over top contenders like Magomed Ankalaev and Jamahal Hill by tallying five consecutive wins. He most recently finished former title challenger Anthony Smith last December, and was supposed to face Hill at UFC 303 before being suspended for obtaining a banned substance. Meanwhile, Pereira will likely return against Ankalaev in his next light heavyweight title defense in 2025. Ankalaev most recently finished Aleksandar Rakić at UFC 308 to earn the presumptive next title shot. Rountree’s line skip at UFC 307 turned into an instant classic fight with Pereira. But, the consequences of the damage he suffered against Pereira could potentially be long-term . Rountree’s admission describes the trials and tribulations fighters undergo when they battle inside the Octagon. As he prepares for his next fight camp, Rountree will remember his clash against Pereira and the momentarily period of blindness he suffered. READ MORE: Chael Sonnen makes stunning prediction about Dana White’s political futureGordon Brown has declared his opposition to legalising assisted (Owen Humphrey Media Assignments/PA) dying Former prime minister Gordon Brown has declared his opposition to legalising assisted dying, which will soon be debated by MPs. The former Labour PM said the death of his newborn daughter in 2002 did “not convince me of the case for assisted dying; it convinced me of the value and imperative of good end-of-life care”. In a rare intervention ahead of the Commons debate on the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill on Friday, November 29, Mr Brown shared a glimpse of the time he and his wife Sarah spent with their baby, Jennifer, who died when she was only 11 days old. Writing in the Guardian newspaper, Mr Brown said: “We could only sit with her, hold her tiny hand and be there for her as life ebbed away. She died in our arms. “But those days we spent with her remain among the most precious days of my and Sarah’s lives.” While he acknowledged that at the heart of the assisted dying debate is a “desire to prevent suffering”, the former Labour MP called for a commission on end-of-life care to be set up, instead of the law change which MPs will consider. This commission, he said, should work to create a “fully-funded, 10-year strategy for improved and comprehensive palliative care”. “When only a small fraction of the population are expected to choose assisted dying, would it not be better to focus all our energies on improving all-round hospice care to reach everyone in need of end of life support?” he said. Mr Brown added: “Medical advances that can transform end-of-life care and the horror of people dying alone, as with Covid, have taught us a great deal. “This generation have it in our power to ensure no-one should have to face death alone, uncared for, or subject to avoidable pain.” Labour MP Kim Leadbeater is sponsoring the Bill (Ben Whitley/PA) Kim Leadbeater, the Labour MP sponsoring the assisted dying Bill through the Commons, said she was “deeply touched” by Mr Brown’s decision to share his story. The Spen Valley MP said she agreed completely with his calls for better end-of-life care. But Ms Leadbeater added: “He and I agree on very many things but we don’t agree on this. “Only legislation by Parliament can put right what Sir Keir Starmer calls the ‘injustice that we have trapped within our current arrangement’. “The need to address the inability of the current law to provide people with safeguards against coercion and the choice of a better death, and to protect their loved ones from possible prosecution, cannot wait. “So for me it isn’t a case of one or the other. My Bill already includes the need for the Government to report back to Parliament on the availability and quality of palliative care, and I strongly support further detailed examination of its provision. We need to do both.” Though Ms Leadbeater made reference to the Prime Minister as she set out her difference from Mr Brown’s position, Sir Keir has opted not to say whether he will support the Bill. MPs will be given a free vote on the legislation, meaning their political parties will not require them to vote for or against it, and it will be a matter for their personal consideration. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper is the latest senior minister to disclose her position on assisted dying, signalling to broadcasters on Friday that she may support the Bill. “I continue to support the principle of needing change but also to ensure that we’ve got the proper safeguards and systems in place,” she told ITV’s Good Morning Britain. Asked if that meant a “yes” when the Bill comes to the Commons, she replied: “I think I last voted on this about 20 years ago and so I have supported the principle in the past and continue to believe that change is needed but we do need to have that debate on the detail and I’ll continue to follow that debate next Friday.”

Among those possibilities is replacing Florida Sen. Marco Rubio , whom Trump tapped to be the next secretary of state. If Rubio is confirmed, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis will choose who takes the seat through the remainder of Rubio’s term, which expires in 2026. “It is something I would seriously consider,” she told The Associated Press in an interview. “If I’m being completely transparent, I don’t know exactly what that would look like. And I certainly want to get all of the information possible if that is something that’s real for me. But yeah, I would 100% consider it.” Elected as RNC co-chair in March, Lara Trump was a key player in the Republicans retaking the White House and control of the Senate while maintaining a narrow House majority. What she does next could shape Republican politics, given her elevated political profile and her ties to the incoming president. The idea of placing a Trump family member in the Senate has been lauded in some Republican circles. Among the people pushing for her to replace Rubio is Maye Musk, mother of Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk . “The Senate is an old man’s club. We desperately need a smart, young, outspoken woman who will reveal their secrets,” she posted on X. Lara Trump is 42. Elon Musk, who was with Lara Trump on election night at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, responded to his mother’s post: “Lara Trump is genuinely great.” Led by chairman Michael Whatley and Lara Trump, the RNC invested heavily in recruiting roughly 230,000 volunteers and an army of lawyers for what it called its “election integrity” effort, four years after Donald Trump lost his reelection bid to Democrat Joe Biden, citing false or unproven theories about voter fraud. Outside groups such as Turning Point Action and Musk’s America PAC took a greater responsibility for advertising and get-out-the-vote efforts. While Whatley will remain RNC chairman, Lara Trump said she felt she had accomplished her goals in the co-chair role. “With that big win, I kind of feel like my time is up,” she said. “What I intended to do has been done.” Lara Trump praised Musk’s new endeavor, the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE , a nongovernmental task force headed by Musk and and fellow entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy . They’ve been tapped to fire federal workers , cut programs and slash federal regulations as part of Trump’s “Save America” agenda for his second term. “I really don’t think we’ve seen movement like this in our federal government since our country’s founding in many ways,” she said. “And I think if they are successful in what they plan to do, I think it is going to be transformative to America in a great way.” She said she expects a different presidency this time, beginning with the structure of the administration: While Trump’s daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner served as White House advisers in his last administration, Lara Trump said she doesn’t see any family member taking any position in the White House this time around with her father-in-law. “He really wants to get in there and do a good job for the four years, and that’s all he wants to serve,” she said. “Four years, and he’s out.” Lara Trump also says she expects the Republican Party to be more unified than it has ever been. When she became co-chair in May, the Trump campaign and the RNC merged, with staffers fired and positions restructured. She said the result could spell trouble for GOP lawmakers who do not agree with Trump’s agenda. “The whole party has totally shifted and totally changed,” she said. “I think people are feeling a little more bold in coming out with their political views.” ___ Linderman reported from Baltimore and Mendoza from Santa Cruz, California.

Linda Cardellini Joins Jason Bateman & David Harbour In Steve Conrad’s HBO Limited Series ‘DTF St. Louis’TORONTO — With Jan. 27 marking 500 days out from the 2026 World Cup kickoff, some 50-plus staff are fleshing out the Canadian end of the tournament at FIFA’s Toronto office. The office has been around for a year, although it took six months to get it to where it is now — a fully functioning space with more than a little character. The entrance features a display of 14 official match balls dating back to the 1970 World Cup. A giant 2026 cut-out in the shape of the FIFA World Cup trophy provides a unique photo op. Maple Leaf motifs decorate the converted factory, which is getting busier by the day. Peter Montopoli, chief tournament officer for the Canadian end, says the staff numbers will soon reach 80, with another 600 to 700 involved during the event itself. A lot has happened since Montopoli, then Canada Soccer’s general secretary, and Victor Montagliani, then Canada Soccer’s incoming president, hashed out the idea of bidding for the men’s World Cup at a 2011 dinner at a Vancouver restaurant with Walter Sieber, director-general of sports at the 1976 Montreal Olympics and a man plugged into the world governing body of soccer. “When we announced in May 2012 ... it wasn’t actually accepted very well by a few journalists in this city, who kind of laughed at it and scoffed at it,” said Montagliani, who still keeps one of those negative articles in his desk. Montagliani, now president of CONCACAF and a FIFA vice-president, looks forward to the 2026 tournament — an expanded 48-team, 104-game colossus co-hosted by Canada, the United States and Mexico — and its legacy. He calls it a “seminal moment ... that I think is going to push the game to the next level.” “What I see is (that) ’26, quite frankly, is really the beginning of the next era for the game in our country. It’s not the culmination of it,” Montagliani told a media roundtable Monday. “Hosting a World Cup is like nothing any of us (know). I don’t even think I know what it’s going to be like. And I’ve put on a few of these things. And I still don’t know. I think I’m underestimate the impact this (tournament) is going to be. And if I’m underestimating, the person on the street is underestimating it too.” Staff at the Toronto office are working on everything from stadium and venue operations, and safety and security to commercial, legal, finance and government relations. They work in conjunction with FIFA offices in Miami and Mexico as well as the FIFA head office in Zurich. Canada and Mexico, which has three host cities to Canada’s two, will each host 13 matches with the U.S. staging the remaining 78 across its 11 host cities. Toronto and Vancouver will each host five opening-round matches plus a round-of-32 knockout match. Vancouver will also stage a round-of-16 game. FIFA plans to open a tournament office in Vancouver in the second quarter of 2025. Both Canadian offices will be walking distance to their local venues: Toronto’s BMO Field and B.C. Place Stadium. Montopoli and his staff have a detailed timeline, covering everything from the tournament draw to unveiling of mascots, official songs and posters. FIFA is encouraging fans interested in tournament tickets to register via FIFA.com. Hospitality packages are already open and other packages are expected next September, with single-game tickets to follow after the draw in early December 2025. There is much to be done, starting with the two Canadian host stadiums. A ring of permanent suites is under construction at B.C. Place. BMO Field will get an additional 17,750 seats, bringing total capacity to around 45,735 seats, with the north and south ends expanded. Not all the new seats will be permanent, but some of the new suites at BMO Field will be. Montopoli says his staff are working with the City of Toronto, which owns the stadium, and Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, which manages the facility, to decide what upgrades will permanent. “They’re still in discussion with that, because they still have to work through the economics of it” he said. Improvements include new video boards. And while some of the expanded BMO stands will be temporary, the additions will be proper seats not benches. Montagliani says every stadium among the 16 host cities is getting upgrades, even AT&T Stadium in Arlington, the US$1.2-billion-dollar home of the Dallas Cowboys. Vancouver has already announced its tournament training facilities will be at Killarney Park and Memorial South Park once upgrades are complete. While Toronto has yet to confirm its training venues, with fields at Etobicoke’s Centennial Park one option, Montopoli says they will be finalized in the first quarter of 2025. FIFA’s Miami-based tournament traffic lead is currently visiting the city, a “world-class expert” who has done World Cups, Olympic Games and the 2015 Pan-American Games in Toronto, said Montopoli. “She’s fully aware of everything, Toronto’s transport issues,” he added. Fans can expect a much different landscape around the stadiums than normal, with an expanded secure zone. “This is not the Grey Cup. This is the World Cup and it’s going to be completely different from an operational logistical standpoint, logistical standpoint, than anything we’ve ever experienced,” Montagliani said. And while holding a tournament in 16 host cities and three countries is vastly different from the 2022 tournament in Qatar, which had all eight stadiums in and around the capital of Doha, Montagliani says a lot of FIFA’s World Cup blueprint can be transferred. “A venue is a venue is a venue,” he said. Teams will have their own base camps during the group stage with nearby cities grouped in clusters. Toronto, for example, is linked to Philadelphia, Boston and New York, while Vancouver is grouped with Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles. — Follow @NeilMDavidson on X platform This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 8, 2024. A judge on Monday rejected a request to block a San Jose State women's volleyball team member from playing in a conference tournament on grounds that she is transgender. The ruling by U.S. Magistrate Judge S. Kato Crews in Denver will allow the player, who has played all season, to compete in the Mountain West Conference women's championship opening this week in Las Vegas. The ruling comes in a lawsuit filed by nine current players against the Mountain West Conference challenging the league's policies for allowing transgender players to participate. The players argued that letting her compete was a safety risk and unfair. While some media have reported those and other details, neither San Jose State nor the forfeiting teams have confirmed the school has a trans woman volleyball player. The Associated Press is withholding the player's name because she has not commented publicly on her gender identity. School officials also have declined an interview request with the player. People are also reading... Crews' ruling referred to the athlete as an "alleged transgender" player and noted that no defendant disputed that the San Jose State roster includes a transgender woman player. San Jose State will "continue to support its student-athletes and reject discrimination in all forms," the university said in a statement, confirming that all its student-athletes are eligible to participate under NCAA and conference rules. "We are gratified that the Court rejected an eleventh-hour attempt to change those rules. Our team looks forward to competing in the Mountain West volleyball tournament this week." The conference did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment. The players filed a notice for emergency appeal with the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Crews said the players who filed the complaint could have sought relief much earlier, noting the individual universities had acknowledged that not playing their games against San Jose State this season would result in a loss in league standings. He also refused a request to re-seed the tournament without the forfeited losses. The judge said injunctions are meant to preserve the status quo. The conference policy regarding forfeiting for refusing to play against a team with a transgender player had been in effect since 2022 and the San Jose State player has been on the roster since 2022 -– making that the status quo. The player competed at the college level three previous seasons, including two for San Jose State, drawing little attention. This season's awareness of her reported identity led to an uproar among some players, pundits, parents and politicians in a major election year. Crews' ruling also said injunctions are meant to prevent harm, but in this case, he argued, the harm has already occurred. The games have been forfeited, the tournament has been seeded, the teams have made travel plans and the participants have confirmed they're playing. The tournament starts Wednesday and continues Friday and Saturday. Colorado State is seeded first and San Jose State, second. The teams split their regular-season matches and both get byes into Friday's semifinals. San Jose State will play the winner of Wednesday's match between Utah State and Boise State — teams that both forfeited matches to SJSU during the regular season. Boise State associate athletic director Chris Kutz declined to comment on whether the Broncos would play SJSU if they won their first-round tournament game. Utah State officials did not immediately respond to emails seeking comment. The conference tournament winner gets an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. San Jose State coach Todd Kress, whose team has not competed in the national tournament since 2001, has said his team has been getting "messages of hate" and that has taken a toll on his players. Several teams refused to play against San Jose State during the season, earning losses in the official conference standings. Boise State and Wyoming each had two forfeits while Utah State and Nevada both had one. Southern Utah, a member of the Western Athletic Conference, was first to cancel against San Jose State this year. Nevada's players stated they "refuse to participate in any match that advances injustice against female athletes," without elaborating. Nevada did not qualify for the conference tournament. The nine current players and others now suing the Mountain West Conference, the California State University Board of Trustees and others include San Jose State senior setter and co-captain Brooke Slusser. The teammate Slusser says is transgender hits the volleyball with more force than others on the team, raising fear during practices of suffering concussions from a head hit, the complaint says. The Independent Council on Women's Sports is funding a separate lawsuit against the NCAA for allowing transgender women to compete in women's sports. Both lawsuits claim the landmark 1972 federal antidiscrimination law known as Title IX prohibits transgender women in women's sports. Title IX prohibits sexual discrimination in federally funded education; Slusser is a plaintiff in both lawsuits. Several circuit courts have used a U.S. Supreme Court ruling to conclude that discriminating against someone based on their transgender status or sexual orientation is sex-based discrimination, Crews wrote. That means case law does not prove the "likelihood of success" needed to grant an injunction. An NCAA policy that subjects transgender participation to the rules of sports governing bodies took effect this academic year. USA Volleyball says a trans woman must suppress testosterone for 12 months before competing. The NCAA has not flagged any issues with San Jose State. The Republican governors of Idaho, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming have made public statements in support of the team cancellations, citing fairness in women's sports. President-elect Donald Trump likewise has spoken out against allowing transgender women to compete in women's sports. Crews was a magistrate judge in Colorado's U.S. District Court for more than five years before President Joe Biden appointed him as a federal judge in January. All times Eastern | Odds via SportsLine consensus San Diego State at Utah State Date: Saturday, Nov. 23 | Time: 3:30 p.m. Location: Maverik Stadium -- Logan, Utah TV: CBS Sports Network [ Channel finder ] Live stream: CBSSports.com | Mobile: CBS Sports App (Free) Spread: Utah State -4 | Will the Aggies cover? Check out SportsLine's Week 13 projections here San Diego State has had a rough go of it lately, thanks in large part to a brutal schedule. The Aztecs are riding a four-game losing streak. Three of those games came against teams that were ranked in the most recent AP Top 25, including a head-to-head contest against College Football Playoff contender Boise State. That skid all but knocked San Diego State out of the bowl race, but there's still pride to play for, and the schedule does open up a bit over the last couple of weeks. Utah State has taken its fair share of knocks this season. The Aggies share an identical 3-7 record with the Aztecs, though they have won two out of their last three games to build some late-year momentum. There could be some fireworks in this showdown: San Diego State and Utah State allow a combined 67.4 points per game. Boise State at Wyoming Date: Saturday, Nov. 23 | Time: 7 p.m. ET Location: War Memorial Stadium -- Laramie, Wyoming TV: CBS Sports Network [ Channel finder ] Live stream: CBSSports.com | Mobile: CBS Sports App (Free) Spread: Boise State -22.5 | Will the Broncos cover? Check out SportsLine's Week 13 projections here Boise State has been fairly dominant this year, and it is a heavy favorite as it travels to face Wyoming. The Broncos have gotten some tough tests recently as they continue on their journey towards the Mountain West Championship Game -- and, perhaps, even beyond. After winning three of its first four MWC games by at least 21 points, Boise State got taken to the brink against a now 3-8 Nevada squad in Week 11, escaping with a narrow 28-21 win. Then, last Saturday, the Broncos trailed San Jose State 21-14 entering the third quarter before scoring 28 unanswered points to pull away late. So Boise State can't take anything for granted, even if Wyoming is 2-8 on the year with just one win since the start of October. Colorado State at Fresno State Date: Saturday, Nov. 23 | Time: 10:30 p.m. ET Location: Valley Children's Stadium -- Fresno, California TV: CBS Sports Network [ Channel finder ] Live stream: CBSSports.com | Mobile: CBS Sports App (Free) Spread: Fresno State -3 | Will the Bulldogs cover? Check out SportsLine's Week 13 projections here This is Colorado State's biggest remaining test on the path to the MWC Championship Game. Ranked programs like Boise State and even UNLV have stolen the spotlight, but the Rams are quietly 5-0 in conference play and haven't lost in over a month after a lackluster 2-3 start to the year. Granted, they've only faced off against one team with a winning record amid their five-game winning streak -- and that will not change as they take on Fresno State -- but there's something to be said about taking care of business amid a chaotic year. As for Fresno State, the Bulldogs, at 5-5, are one win away from bowl eligibility. Though they have been for almost a month now after beating San Jose State on Oct. 26 before suffering (bad) back-to-back losses against Hawaii and Air Force.

Redshirt junior linebacker Deontae Lawson suffered a significant leg injury that is season-ending. Alabama’s defense will now have a new green-dot communicator on defense. It will be senior linebacker Justin Jefferson. On Tuesday, defensive coordinator Kane Wommack talked about Jefferson taking over the communication duties in lieu of Lawson’s absence. “Justin Jefferson has been doing it all season as our No. 2 in that position,” Wommack said. “He has done a great job. Obviously, Jihaad can do it, but Jihaad plays so many different positions that it is hard for a guy that is moving around like that for him to be the green dot communication. We have two guys that can handle it, but Justin will take the majority of that responsibility this week.” Jefferson has played in every game for the Crimson Tide this season. He has served as an additional linebacker in certain packages. In addition, he has played special teams. The native of Memphis, Tennessee will be called on in a big way this weekend against Auburn. It will be Jefferson’s first time starting at inside linebacker for Alabama since arriving in Tuscaloosa from Pearl River Community College. He will have a great companion alongside him in junior Jihaad Campbell. The New Jersey native is currently being projected by several draft experts to be a first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. He leads the team with 99 tackles. He is a four-down, ‘do-it-all’ type of linebacker. In order for Alabama’s defense to have success, I would say that Jefferson and Campbell have to play their best game of the season. Jefferson will need to be able to communicate effectively so the defense can align while also being able to carry out his roles. It will be a tall task but one that Jefferson is capable of achieving given his knowledge of the defense. Campbell has had some strong performances this season, but his play this weekend could be the determining factor in how good or bad Alabama’s defense performs. Auburn has a balanced offensive attack that is sure to present some challenges. Alabama’s linebacker duo will need to step up and make some big plays in order for the Crimson Tide to come away with a much-needed victory. By HALELUYA HADERO The emergence of generative artificial intelligence tools that allow people to efficiently produce novel and detailed online reviews with almost no work has put merchants , service providers and consumers in uncharted territory, watchdog groups and researchers say. They are typically traded on private social media groups between fake review brokers and businesses willing to pay. Sometimes, such reviews are initiated by businesses that offer customers incentives such as gift cards for positive feedback. But AI-infused text generation tools, popularized by OpenAI’s ChatGPT , enable fraudsters to produce reviews faster and in greater volume, according to tech industry experts. The deceptive practice, which is illegal in the U.S. , is carried out year-round but becomes a bigger problem for consumers during the holiday shopping season , when many people rely on reviews to help them purchase gifts. Fake reviews are found across a wide range of industries, from e-commerce, lodging and restaurants, to services such as home repairs, medical care and piano lessons. The Transparency Company, a tech company and watchdog group that uses software to detect fake reviews, said it started to see AI-generated reviews show up in large numbers in mid-2023 and they have multiplied ever since. For a report released this month, The Transparency Company analyzed 73 million reviews in three sectors: home, legal and medical services. Nearly 14% of the reviews were likely fake, and the company expressed a “high degree of confidence” that 2.3 million reviews were partly or entirely AI-generated. “It’s just a really, really good tool for these review scammers,” said Maury Blackman, an investor and advisor to tech startups, who reviewed The Transparency Company’s work and is set to lead the organization starting Jan. 1. In August, software company DoubleVerify said it was observing a “significant increase” in mobile phone and smart TV apps with reviews crafted by generative AI. The reviews often were used to deceive customers into installing apps that could hijack devices or run ads constantly, the company said. The following month, the Federal Trade Commission sued the company behind an AI writing tool and content generator called Rytr, accusing it of offering a service that could pollute the marketplace with fraudulent reviews. The FTC, which this year banned the sale or purchase of fake reviews, said some of Rytr’s subscribers used the tool to produce hundreds and perhaps thousands of reviews for garage door repair companies, sellers of “replica” designer handbags and other businesses. Max Spero, CEO of AI detection company Pangram Labs, said the software his company uses has detected with almost certainty that some AI-generated appraisals posted on Amazon bubbled up to the top of review search results because they were so detailed and appeared to be well thought-out. But determining what is fake or not can be challenging. External parties can fall short because they don’t have “access to data signals that indicate patterns of abuse,” Amazon has said. Pangram Labs has done detection for some prominent online sites, which Spero declined to name due to non-disclosure agreements. He said he evaluated Amazon and Yelp independently. Many of the AI-generated comments on Yelp appeared to be posted by individuals who were trying to publish enough reviews to earn an “Elite” badge, which is intended to let users know they should trust the content, Spero said. The badge provides access to exclusive events with local business owners. Fraudsters also want it so their Yelp profiles can look more realistic, said Kay Dean, a former federal criminal investigator who runs a watchdog group called Fake Review Watch. To be sure, just because a review is AI-generated doesn’t necessarily mean its fake. Some consumers might experiment with AI tools to generate content that reflects their genuine sentiments. Some non-native English speakers say they turn to AI to make sure they use accurate language in the reviews they write. “It can help with reviews (and) make it more informative if it comes out of good intentions,” said Michigan State University marketing professor Sherry He, who has researched fake reviews. She says tech platforms should focus on the behavioral patters of bad actors, which prominent platforms already do, instead of discouraging legitimate users from turning to AI tools. Prominent companies are developing policies for how AI-generated content fits into their systems for removing phony or abusive reviews. Some already employ algorithms and investigative teams to detect and take down fake reviews but are giving users some flexibility to use AI. Spokespeople for Amazon and Trustpilot, for example, said they would allow customers to post AI-assisted reviews as long as they reflect their genuine experience. Yelp has taken a more cautious approach, saying its guidelines require reviewers to write their own copy. “With the recent rise in consumer adoption of AI tools, Yelp has significantly invested in methods to better detect and mitigate such content on our platform,” the company said in a statement. The Coalition for Trusted Reviews, which Amazon, Trustpilot, employment review site Glassdoor, and travel sites Tripadvisor, Expedia and Booking.com launched last year, said that even though deceivers may put AI to illicit use, the technology also presents “an opportunity to push back against those who seek to use reviews to mislead others.” “By sharing best practice and raising standards, including developing advanced AI detection systems, we can protect consumers and maintain the integrity of online reviews,” the group said. The FTC’s rule banning fake reviews, which took effect in October, allows the agency to fine businesses and individuals who engage in the practice. Tech companies hosting such reviews are shielded from the penalty because they are not legally liable under U.S. law for the content that outsiders post on their platforms. Tech companies, including Amazon, Yelp and Google, have sued fake review brokers they accuse of peddling counterfeit reviews on their sites. The companies say their technology has blocked or removed a huge swath of suspect reviews and suspicious accounts. However, some experts say they could be doing more. “Their efforts thus far are not nearly enough,” said Dean of Fake Review Watch. “If these tech companies are so committed to eliminating review fraud on their platforms, why is it that I, one individual who works with no automation, can find hundreds or even thousands of fake reviews on any given day?” Consumers can try to spot fake reviews by watching out for a few possible warning signs , according to researchers. Overly enthusiastic or negative reviews are red flags. Jargon that repeats a product’s full name or model number is another potential giveaway. When it comes to AI, research conducted by Balázs Kovács, a Yale professor of organization behavior, has shown that people can’t tell the difference between AI-generated and human-written reviews. Some AI detectors may also be fooled by shorter texts, which are common in online reviews, the study said. However, there are some “AI tells” that online shoppers and service seekers should keep it mind. Panagram Labs says reviews written with AI are typically longer, highly structured and include “empty descriptors,” such as generic phrases and attributes. The writing also tends to include cliches like “the first thing that struck me” and “game-changer.”Online child exploitation spiked during lockdowns. Police worry it’s here to stay

By the early 1900s, Argentina was in a golden age. It rose to become a top 10 nation in global wealth. The country had a top-notch railway system, rich agricultural yields, bountiful mineral wealth, and a high-growth economy. Its middle class grew by leaps and bounds. Laissez-faire capitalism had done wonders for the country. Following the Great Depression in 1929, everything changed. The state took over economic planning. Social and welfare programs were dramatically expanded. Industries were nationalized. Government spending soared. As wealth was redistributed, corruption spread like a plague. A long period of instability followed, extending up until today. There were 7 military coups in Argentina during the 20th century. Much of the time the economy was in shambles. Inflation spiraled out of control, often surpassing 100% annually. The past 8 decades have been a very difficult period for Argentinians. A Chainsaw Massacre (For Bureaucracy) Things have finally begun to look up for Argentina. In December of 2023, President Javier Milei took office and began a libertarian reform program. The shift is reflected in the country’s stock market, as shown by the chart below. It shows the price of ARGT, the largest Argentina ETF, since its launch in 2011. Source: Yahoo Finance As you can see, Argentine stocks were basically flat for an entire decade (priced in US dollars). But since Milei took over, shares have more than doubled as foreign investment flooded into the country. What has Milei done to change Argentina’s path so dramatically? In October, Daily Reckoning contributor Joel Bowman explained in The Greatest Political Experiment of Our Age : All of that was within the first 48 hours of his presidency. Milei has taken a metaphorical chainsaw to government spending. The country just emerged from recession, and its public sector has posted a financial surplus for the first time since 2008. Impressively, inflation is down from a recent high of 25% per month to 2.5% in the most recent data. Not All Sunshine Change of this magnitude is not easy. I have spoken with a few Argentine friends recently, and every one of them has a story about people they know getting fired from their government jobs. Argentina’s poverty rate increased by 11% to 53% earlier this year. Slashing government spending will increase productivity over the mid and long term, but in the short term, it does harm employment and GDP. Despite this, all the Argentinians I talked with expressed hopefulness going forward. They acknowledge the system had to change and seem willing to bear the consequences in exchange for a shot at long-term stability. As we await Donald Trump’s second term, it is worth studying Argentina. Milei and Trump have much in common. They both campaigned on eliminating government waste and revitalizing their respective economies. Milei has a ~13-month lead on us. So if Trump does follow through with his promise to slash federal spending, we can expect a somewhat similar path. Short-term pain is traded for long-term growth. I think that’s a price well worth paying. The question is: can the U.S. government oversee its own downsizing? We shall see. Russian energy giant Gazprom said Saturday it would suspend gas exports to Moldova from 0500 GMT on Jan. 1 due to unpaid debt by Moldova, which is bracing for severe power cuts. It said the company reserved the right to take any action, including terminating the supply contract with Moldova. Russia supplies Moldova with about 2 billion cubic meters of gas per year, which is piped via Ukraine to the breakaway region of Transdniestria, where it is used to generate cheap power that is sold to government-controlled parts of Moldova. Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean condemned the Russian decision, which is a precursor to a total shutdown of Russian gas exports via Ukraine and to Europe, where it flows farther to Slovakia, Austria, Hungary and Italy, once a current transit deal with Ukraine expires on Dec. 31. Moldova will be hit the hardest by the shutdown. "This decision confirms once again the intention of the Kremlin to leave the inhabitants of the Transdniestrian region without light and heat in the middle of the winter," Recean wrote on Facebook, accusing Russia of using energy as a political weapon. Moscow has repeatedly dismissed those allegations. Difference over debt Russia, which is critical of Moldova's West-leaning central government, has said Moldova should pay a debt on past supplies. According to Russian calculations, the debt stands at $709 million. Moldova has put the debt at $8.6 million. Gazprom has said previously it wants Moldova to pay the debt before it starts to pump gas to the country via alternate routes. Transdniestria and the government in Chisinau agreed in 2022 that all Russian gas received by Moldova would flow to the breakaway region, which traditionally does not pay for fuel. Without gas supplies, the power-generating plant could stop working and Moldova and Transdniestria would face hourslong blackouts like those experienced by Ukraine due to Russia's attacks on its energy infrastructure in their war. Recean said Moldova had diversified sources of gas supply "in order to reduce dependence on a single supplier." "Our country is prepared to handle any situation that arises following the Kremlin's decision," he said. Moldova's population of 2.5 million has been preparing for long power cuts since Ukraine's government said it will not extend its transit contract with Gazprom. Moldova and Transdniestria have declared states of emergency over the threat of disrupted gas supplies, and Moldova said Friday it will curb power exports and introduce measures to reduce consumption by at least a third beginning Jan. 1. Moldovan President Maia Sandu has accused Gazprom of provoking an energy crisis, saying it was refusing to supply gas through an alternate route. It’s an opinion that will be as popular as a rendition of the national anthem on Merseyside. If this doesn't change before the start of 2025, Salah can start talking to rival clubs. And the man himself admits, as things stand, "he's more out than in". But the panic now sweeping through millions of Liverpool fans around the world will not be shared by Salah. He can't lose. He either goes on to get a lucrative new deal at the age of 32, or he leaves and secures a contract elsewhere, complete with eye-watering signing on fee. In the meantime, Salah's continued brilliance on the pitch is continuing to increase the heat on the club's owners, Fenway Sports Group, to do the popular thing instead of the sensible one. Salah's 12 goals this season are the main reason Arne Slot's side now have a commanding eight point lead at the top of the table. While Salah remains a world class performer, still at the top of his game and more than capable of achieving success. The longer this scenario continues without a solution, the louder the noise from the stands will become. But FSG have to remain true to their beliefs when it comes to their well-publicised 'Moneyball' strategy. An approach which doesn't include long and expensive deals for players in their 30s. Some sources claim Salah wants a deal in the region of £1m-a-week. But he will be 33 before the start of next season, and like it or not, unlike Trent Alexander-Arnold, is not part of the long-term future under Slot. Slot succeeded last summer and was handed the task of building on the German's legacy. Winning more league titles than the one Klopp managed. Turning Liverpool into serial winners like have been. This will take time, despite City's astonishing demise in recent weeks. And however many times Salah wants to remove his shirt to remind people how ripped he still is, time is something he simply doesn't have on his side. Football remains a business - and handing Salah a new deal makes little sense. FSG have to take the emotion out of the equation, and have skin thick enough to cope with being unpopular for a spell. Salah, meanwhile, should be focusing on helping Liverpool win only their second title in more than three decades, instead of stirring the pot. Helping Liverpool give him that fairy tale finish. Then he can do what most players his age do, and waltz off to Saudi Arabia to pocket a pension most people can only dream about.

mnl777 com LIZ Kendall today tells Brits “if you can work - you must” as she prepares to take benefits away from young adults who refuse jobs and training. Britain spends an eye-popping £150 billion a year on benefits for people of working age, according to official numbers. And the bill is set to balloon as record numbers are signed off sick. Work and Pensions Secretary Ms Kendall vowed to crack the whip to get people off benefits, telling The Sun on Sunday: “I’ve always believed, if you can work, you must. “For young people, this is not only about the opportunity to work, it’s also about skills and training, because today’s world is brutal if you don’t have skills.” Shocking stats show nearly 1 million under-25s are not in education, employment or training - dubbed NEETs. “That is terrible for them, it’s terrible for businesses, many of whom are desperate to recruit, and it’s terrible for taxpayers seeing an ever higher benefits bill”, Ms Kendall said . She will this week announce plans for a radical shake up of the welfare system aimed at driving people back to work. She will offer every Brit aged 21 and under, work or training. Those who refuse will be stripped of their handouts. Most read in Politics Ms Kendall said: "My commitment to young people is this - I value you. I believe in you. I will offer you the chances and choices you deserve. “But in return for that, you have a responsibility to take them up.” This ‘youth guarantee’ is part of a new carrot and stick approach to welfare. These are tougher sanctions than those faced by other adults, who just have their benefits reduced if they refuse to look for work. Ministers are braced for a possible backlash from faint-hearted Labour MPs. But Ms Kendall said it would be a betrayal to leave youngsters on the jobs scrapheap. The welfare white paper - out on Tuesday - will also confirm that £3bn a year will be cut from welfare by reassessing people in disability and sickness benefits for work. This is known as the work capability assessment. Although precise details of how this will be done will come out next year. Neebing’s Sand Hill and Scoble landfills are currently only open on weekends. A resident recently posted on social media that having one day during the week would be more convenient, noting that some other rural municipalities offer that option. Kromm said having Neebing’s landfills open during the week hasn’t been discussed in recent years. Neebing also maintains two “sharing sheds,” which residents can use to drop off or pick up second-hand items that are in good and clean condition and meet certain criteria. The municipality has said that it may have to shut down the shed program if some residents don’t refrain from dropping off items that clearly can’t be reused, like old clothing and worn-out furniture and couches.

Five Video Essays for the Holiday SeasonBitcoin’s wild ride toward $100,00012 Dec 2024 Revealed: The cycle of homelessness, hospital admission and discharge Victoria Macdonald Health and Social Care Editor NHS England is warning of a “tidal wave of flu hitting hospitals” after the number of beds occupied by patients with flu increased by 70% in a week. It was also the busiest November on record for accident and emergency. Hospital bosses are desperate to free up beds, but some are occupied by homeless people, who can’t be discharged without somewhere safe to go. Share on Facebook Share Share on Twitter Tweet Share on WhatsApp Send Share on WhatsApp Send Share on WhatsApp Email Load more share optionsAhead of Ohio State's appearance in the College Football Playoff, head coach Ryan Day received a vote of confidence from his athletic director despite the Buckeyes' latest loss to Michigan. Ohio State AD Ross Bjork appeared on 97.1 The Fan in Columbus on Thursday, where a radio host asked him whether Day would be the Buckeyes' coach at the start of next season regardless of how the playoffs shake out. "Absolutely," said Bjork, who came to Ohio State from the same role at Texas A&M in July. "Coach Day and I have just hit it off so well. I've been really, really impressed. Every single time I've talked to him, I've learned something. He's innovative. He recruits at the highest level. He's got a great staff. There's always tweaks. There was tweaks after last year, right? You're always going to tweak things. You're always going to make adjustments. You're always going to make improvements." Bjork continued by addressing the "championship or bust" attitude held by some of the fanbase. "This whole mentality about -- and look, we live it, and we sign up for it -- but if you get fixated on the end result and not have the process fully baked every time, you're going to lose," Bjork said. "The mindset's going to lose because you're only fixated on one thing. And so what we have to do is this whole ‘championship or bust' mentality, you want that as the goal, but it has to be about the process. "To me, we've got to maybe change some conversations a little bit. I think we need to maybe just approach things a little bit differently." Day is 66-10 as Ohio State's coach and led the Buckeyes to one national championship game appearance, a 52-24 loss to Alabama to cap the 2020 season. Ohio State went 10-2 in the regular season but missed out on a place in the Big Ten championship game when rival Michigan defeated the Buckeyes 13-10 on Nov. 30. It was Michigan's fourth straight win in The Game, and Day is now 1-4 as a head coach against the Wolverines. At the time, Bjork released a statement of support for Day, and he doubled down during Thursday's radio hit. "He's great to work with. He totally gets it. He loves being a Buckeye, and so we're going to support him at the highest level throughout," Bjork said. "But here's the thing too, and the reason why we needed to say something after that game is we're still breathing. They're still alive. The season's not over. The book is not closed, right? And so we've got to have confidence. I mean, Ohio State should be confident every single day. We're Ohio State. "But we also have to make sure we stay to our values and we stick to what we believe in. And so to me, it's the process as much as it is about the end result." --Field Level Media

Even in this banner season for military academy football — complete with winning streaks, national rankings and a conference championship — the biggest goal remains the same. For Army: Beat Navy. For Navy: Beat Army. With the college football landscape changing at a furious rate, the significance of this matchup adds a dose of tradition to mid-December, amid all that talk about the transfer portal and the new expanded playoff. "We've had a good year. You make it a great year by winning this game coming up on Saturday. Frankly, that's just the way it goes around here," Army coach Jeff Monken said. "It's a game and a season really all of its own. We don't apologize for talking about it all the time. We talk about it all the time, and it's 365 days a year." Saturday in Landover, Maryland, is the 125th matchup between Army and Navy, and although these two programs are long removed from their days winning national titles and Heisman Trophies, this is a historic moment in the rivalry. The Black Knights and Midshipmen have combined for 19 wins this season, their highest total ever entering this game. Army (11-1) is ranked 19th in the AP poll after beating Tulane last week to win the American Athletic Conference — the first league title of any kind in the team's 134-year history. Navy (8-3) was ranked as well earlier this season after starting with six straight victories. "I knew we were going to be an improved football team," Navy coach Brian Newberry said. "Didn't know exactly what that was going to look like. I think certainly we've improved in a lot of different areas. I'm excited about the season we've had." This was Army's first season in the AAC, putting the Black Knights and Midshipmen in the same league, although their annual matchup is considered a nonconference game. For a while, there was a chance the teams could meet twice, with a conference championship clash coming before the regularly scheduled Army-Navy game, but that didn't happen. Their most prominent common opponent came from outside the league. Notre Dame handed both Navy and Army its first loss, beating the Midshipmen 51-14 and the Black Knights 49-14. Within the AAC, both teams beat Temple, UAB and East Carolina. Army beat Tulane and Rice and Navy lost to those two teams. Army and Navy also each won its nonconference game against Air Force. Those victories over Air Force mean this season's Commander-In-Chief's Trophy comes down to the Army-Navy game. It's the first time since 2017 that both teams enter this game with a shot at the trophy. It's also the first time since 2017 that both teams enter the game with bowl bids secured. Navy faces Oklahoma in the Armed Forces Bowl and Army takes on Marshall in the Independence Bowl. This year's Army-Navy game is at the Washington Commanders' home stadium in Landover. It was also held there in 2011. This is the first time the game has been in Maryland since Baltimore hosted it in 2016. Baltimore is also up next in 2025. Army quarterback Bryson Daily has 29 rushing touchdowns this season, which is tied for the FBS lead with running back Ashton Jeanty, Boise State's Heisman finalist. Only one QB in FBS history has run for more TDs in a season than Daily. That was Navy's Keenan Reynolds, with 31 in 2013. "You come here to play in this game. The biggest stage possible, millions of people watching and a sold-out NFL stadium. It's awesome," Daily said. "None of the games that happened before this matter. We're going into this game like we're 0-0, they're 0-0 because that's just how you have to come into this game." Navy's closest game this season — win or lose — was a 56-44 win over Memphis. The Midshipmen are the only FBS team that hasn't had a game this season decided by eight points or fewer. AP Sports Writer Stephen Whyno contributed to this report. Bitcoin has surpassed the $100,000 mark as the post-election rally continues. What's next?President Bola Tinubu has said that recent reforms in the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) will open up economic opportunities and improve travel processes for Nigerians and visitors. “We believe that if we rejig the immigration, as it has happened, we will benefit tremendously from economic opportunities, ease of entry, ease of exit,” Tinubu said during the commissioning of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Technology Innovation Complex (BATTIC) in Abuja on Tuesday. The state-of-the-art facility, built by the NIS and named after the president, features advanced infrastructure, including a Data Centre, Command and Control Centre, Visa Approval Centre, ECOWAS Card Centre, Solar Farm, and Passport Centre. Tinubu described the BATTIC inauguration as a fulfilment of his administration’s promise to implement impactful changes in governance, according to Bayo Onanuga, in a statement on Tuesday. Tinubu noted that the complex and its services would enhance the security architecture, transform the ease of doing business in the country, and ultimately boost investor confidence in Nigeria. “The integration of security, whether air, land, or sea, embarked upon by you is a fulfilment of a dream. From the beginning of our administration, we promised to deliver and execute excellent and innovative solutions across the government and the Nigeria Immigration Service. “This state-of-the-art complex comprises seven key components, including a Data Centre, Command and Control Centre, Visa Approval Centre, ECOWAS Card Centre, Solar Farm, and Passport Centre,” he said. Tinubu stressed the need for Nigeria to embrace technology, change and knowledge-based innovations for the good of the nation and commended the Minister of Interior for the Ministry’s achievements regarding issues surrounding the Nigerian passport. According to him, Nigeria, as a country with more than 200 million people, a leader in Africa, must embrace technology, change, innovation, and knowledge-based opportunities to drive a process that is greater for the generality and the larger number of people.

Luigi Nicholas Mangione, the suspect in the fatal shooting of a healthcare executive in New York City, apparently was living a charmed life: the grandson of a wealthy real estate developer, valedictorian of his elite Baltimore prep school and with degrees from one of the nation's top private universities. Friends at an exclusive co-living space at the edge of touristy Waikiki in Hawaii where the 26-year-old Mangione once lived widely considered him a “great guy,” and pictures on his social media accounts show a fit, smiling, handsome young man on beaches and at parties. Now, investigators in New York and Pennsylvania are working to piece together why Mangione may have diverged from this path to make the violent and radical decision to gun down UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in a brazen attack on a Manhattan street. The killing sparked widespread discussions about corporate greed, unfairness in the medical insurance industry and even inspired folk-hero sentiment toward his killer. But Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro sharply refuted that perception after Mangione's arrest on Monday when a customer at a McDonald's restaurant in Pennsylvania spotted Mangione eating and noticed he resembled the shooting suspect in security-camera photos released by New York police. “In some dark corners, this killer is being hailed as a hero. Hear me on this, he is no hero,” Shapiro said. “The real hero in this story is the person who called 911 at McDonald’s this morning.” Mangione comes from a prominent Maryland family. His grandfather, Nick Mangione, who died in 2008, was a successful real estate developer. One of his best-known projects was Turf Valley Resort, a sprawling luxury retreat and conference center outside Baltimore that he purchased in 1978. The Mangione family also purchased Hayfields Country Club north of Baltimore in 1986. On Monday, Baltimore County police officers blocked off an entrance to the property, which public records link to Luigi Mangione’s parents. Reporters and photographers gathered outside the entrance. The father of 10 children, Nick Mangione prepared his five sons — including Luigi Mangione’s father, Louis Mangione — to help manage the family business, according to a 2003 Washington Post report. Nick Mangione had 37 grandchildren, including Luigi, according to the grandfather's obituary. Luigi Mangione’s grandparents donated to charities through the Mangione Family Foundation, according to a statement from Loyola University commemorating Nick Mangione’s wife’s death in 2023. They donated to various causes, including Catholic organizations, colleges and the arts. One of Luigi Mangione’s cousins is Republican Maryland state legislator Nino Mangione, a spokesman for the lawmaker’s office confirmed. “Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi’s arrest,” Mangione’s family said in a statement posted on social media by Nino Mangione. “We offer our prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved.” Mangione, who was valedictorian of his elite Maryland prep school, earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in computer science in 2020 from the University of Pennsylvania, a university spokesman told The Associated Press. He learned to code in high school and helped start a club at Penn for people interested in gaming and game design, according to a 2018 story in Penn Today, a campus publication. His social media posts suggest he belonged to the fraternity Phi Kappa Psi. They also show him taking part in a 2019 program at Stanford University, and in photos with family and friends at the Jersey Shore and in Hawaii, San Diego, Puerto Rico, and other destinations. The Gilman School, from which Mangione graduated in 2016, is one of Baltimore’s elite prep schools. The children of some of the city’s wealthiest and most prominent residents, including Orioles legend Cal Ripken Jr., have attended the school. Its alumni include sportswriter Frank Deford and former Arizona Gov. Fife Symington. In his valedictory speech, Luigi Mangione described his classmates’ “incredible courage to explore the unknown and try new things.” Mangione took a software programming internship after high school at Maryland-based video game studio Firaxis, where he fixed bugs on the hit strategy game Civilization 6, according to a LinkedIn profile. Firaxis' parent company, Take-Two Interactive, said it would not comment on former employees. He more recently worked at the car-buying website TrueCar, but has not worked there since 2023, the head of the Santa Monica, California-based company confirmed to the AP. From January to June 2022, Mangione lived at Surfbreak, a “co-living” space at the edge of touristy Waikiki in Honolulu. Like other residents of the shared penthouse catering to remote workers, Mangione underwent a background check, said Josiah Ryan, a spokesperson for owner and founder R.J. Martin. “Luigi was just widely considered to be a great guy. There were no complaints,” Ryan said. “There was no sign that might point to these alleged crimes they’re saying he committed.” At Surfbreak, Martin learned Mangione had severe back pain from childhood that interfered with many aspects of his life, including surfing, Ryan said. “He went surfing with R.J. once but it didn’t work out because of his back,” Ryan said, but noted that Mangione and Martin often went together to a rock-climbing gym. Mangione left Surfbreak to get surgery on the mainland, Ryan said, then later returned to Honolulu and rented an apartment. An image posted to a social media account linked to Mangione showed what appeared to be an X-ray of a metal rod and multiple screws inserted into someone's lower spine. Martin stopped hearing from Mangione six months to a year ago. An X account linked to Mangione includes recent posts about the negative impact of smartphones on children; healthy eating and exercise habits; psychological theories; and a quote from Indian philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti about the dangers of becoming “well-adjusted to a profoundly sick society.” Mangione likely was motivated by his anger at what he called “parasitic” health insurance companies and a disdain for corporate greed, according to a law enforcement bulletin obtained by AP. He wrote that the U.S. has the most expensive healthcare system in the world and that the profits of major corporations continue to rise while “our life expectancy” does not, according to the bulletin, based on a review of the suspect’s handwritten notes and social media posts. He appeared to view the targeted killing of the UnitedHealthcare CEO as a symbolic takedown, asserting in his note that he is the “first to face it with such brutal honesty,” the bulletin said. Mangione called “Unabomber” Ted Kaczynski a “political revolutionary” and may have found inspiration from the man who carried out a series of bombings while railing against modern society and technology, the document said. Associated Press reporters Lea Skene in Baltimore; Jennifer Sinco Kelleher in Honolulu; Maryclaire Dale in Philadelphia; John Seewer in Toledo, Ohio; and Michael Kunzelman in Washington, D.C., contributed to this report.

(AP) — New York Jets kicker Greg Zuerlein will be activated from injured reserve and will play against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. Interim coach Jeff Ulbrich announced Friday that Zuerlein is returning after missing seven games with a knee injury to his left, non-kicking leg. He had been shaky before the injury, but the Jets have since been unsettled at the position, with Riley Patterson, Spencer Shrader and Anders Carlson all filling in. “He came back, looked healthy, kicked the ball well this week,” Ulbrich said of Zuerlein. “So, he’ll be our guy going forward here.” Zuerlein is officially listed as questionable to play, but was a full participant the final two practices. Wide receiver Davante Adams is also questionable, but likely to play after participating on a limited basis Friday because of a hip ailment that held him out Thursday. Cornerback Sauce Gardner is also questionable with a hamstring injury that sidelined him in the second half of New York’s loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Zuerlein, who re-signed with the Jets last offseason on a two-year deal, made just nine of 15 field goal attempts and missed one extra point in the first eight games this year. He had been one of the NFL’s most consistently reliable kickers the previous two seasons with the Jets. Patterson kicked in one game after the Jets placed Zuerlein on IR. Shrader also kicked in one game before he was signed off the practice squad by Kansas City. Carlson had been the kicker the past five games, but missed a field goal and an extra point against the Rams and the Jets signed Greg Joseph to the practice squad to provide competition. Ulbrich said earlier in the week Zuerlein would also be in the mix after a long layoff. “I think sometimes that can be powerful, an opportunity just to take a deep breath, get his body healthy again and get a restart,” Ulbrich said. “So I’m excited for him to do his thing these last two games and really demonstrate to everybody who he is as a kicker.” Adams said he was injured early in the game against the Rams, but was still able to catch seven passes for 68 yards and a touchdown. He said he was optimistic about his chances of playing at Buffalo. “We’re still working on it,” Adams said after practice Friday. “We’re treating it, trying to get it right so we can hopefully be there and ready by game time.” Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. He was listed as questionable and was limited at practice all week. Also questionable but expected to play are right tackle Morgan Moses (knee), safety Tony Adams (ankle), cornerback Michael Carter II (back), defensive end Haason Reddick (neck) and defensive lineman Braiden McGregor (ankle). HARRISBURG, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has introduced a mandatory bulk testing requirement for milk to combat the potential spread of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI). While the virus has not been identified in Pennsylvania dairy cattle to date, state officials are prioritizing preventive measures as cases continue to rise in other parts of the nation. Providing testing services at no cost to farmers, the state aims to maintain the health of its agricultural industry and protect its workforce from the economic and operational challenges posed by HPAI. Milk samples will now be routinely collected from bulk milk tankers and tested to detect early signs of the virus. “Taking this proactive step will ensure that we can protect our cattle, poultry, and farmworkers,” Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding said. “We are taking this step after careful consideration, in consultation with dairy and poultry farmers, and after voluntary testing was not adequate to get samples necessary for detection and prevention. Pennsylvania’s large number of farms with both dairy cattle and poultry present unique risks that demand extra vigilance.” The precautionary measure requires milk samples to be taken from bulk milk tankers that transport milk from Pennsylvania farms to processing facilities. Processors located in Pennsylvania will collect samples at their plants, while tankers delivering out of state will have samples collected by shippers, whether they are individual farmers or cooperatives. All samples must be submitted to an approved laboratory within 48 hours for testing. The initiative is designed to identify the presence of HPAI in its early stages. Should the virus be detected, additional investigations will be launched to trace the source. Affected farms will be subject to special quarantine measures to contain and eradicate the virus. State Veterinarian Dr. Alex Hamberg emphasized the importance of these efforts. “Increased, proactive testing is the only way to confirm that we don’t have the virus in Pennsylvania dairy cows or catch it early and stamp it out if we do, so farms can quickly get back to normal,” Hamberg stated. “We’ve seen in other states that the virus shows up in milk before cows show clinical signs of illness. The virus has spread in other states by moving dairy cows from one farm to another, then it has spread among cows. It can be carried on contaminated equipment, trucks, and farmworkers’ footwear and clothing moving between farms and buildings. Rigorous biosecurity, including disinfecting boots, equipment, and vehicles, and using footbaths at barn entryways is critical.” The decision to require precautionary testing is not without precedent; states like California, Colorado, Michigan, and Oklahoma have implemented similar programs in response to HPAI. For Pennsylvania, a state with a robust agricultural economy valued at $132.5 billion annually and home to over 593,000 jobs, taking steps to mitigate risks is vital. “Without this knowledge, we cannot take appropriate action to prevent the spread to neighboring farms,” said Chuck Turner, President of Turner Dairy Farms in Allegheny County. “We feel we have a responsibility to our family dairy partners, employees, and consumers to do the right thing to ensure safety and mitigate negative impacts to the industry. I appreciate the leadership of the PA Department of Ag to prevent the spread of avian flu, and believe they are making the right decision to require bulk milk testing.” Turner Dairy, which processes milk from family farms across Pennsylvania, has been voluntarily testing its milk for HPAI for 20 weeks. Their measures reflect industry-wide efforts to safeguard cattle and prevent adverse impacts on the state’s large dairy and poultry sectors. Pennsylvania has made strides in combating HPAI, including becoming the first state in 2024 to issue a quarantine order for testing dairy cattle entering its borders. This move was subsequently adopted by the USDA and other states. Beyond regulatory measures, Pennsylvania’s government has made significant investments in agricultural infrastructure and biosecurity. The state’s efforts include the establishment of a specialized fund to help poultry farmers recover from avian influenza outbreaks, expand laboratory services for faster disease detection in western Pennsylvania, and research new technology to prevent future outbreaks. Collaborative efforts with organizations such as the Centers for Dairy Excellence and Penn State Extension ensure that farmers remain informed and supported. “This approach is about protecting the two largest components of Pennsylvania’s agriculture—dairy and poultry,” Redding said. “By taking preventative steps now, we’re ensuring sustainability and resilience in the face of any future outbreaks.” The implementation of this testing requirement exemplifies Pennsylvania’s efforts to safeguard its agricultural industry while maintaining the health of its livestock and the confidence of consumers in dairy product safety. With a large network of interconnected farms, the state is taking no chances, ensuring that preventive policies and robust systems are in place to manage risk effectively. Matt Strome scored the game-winning goal 66 seconds into overtime, and the Hershey Bears defeated Coachella Valley 5-4 in Game 6 of the Calder Cup Finals. As the calendar year winds down, the Sentinel's sports staff looks back on some of the top stories from 2024. “It’s the way you want to draw it up every year.” The Hershey Bears’ 2023-24 season featured a storybook ending when Matt Strome scored the goal 66 seconds into overtime that clinched the club’s record 13th Calder Cup championship and ended a wild Game 6 against the Coachella Valley Firebirds in front of a home crowd that packed the Giant Center. Hershey had also beaten Coachella Valley in the 2023 Calder Cup Final and lifted the trophy in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2009-10. Before the historic celebration on the Giant Center ice in June, the Bears had weathered adversity on their path to another title. They lost a handful of players, notably defensemen, to injury on their playoff run, and in the Eastern Conference Finals, a comfortable 3-0 lead against the Cleveland Monsters slipped into a tense winner-take-all Game 7 in Hershey. But the Bears answered each time. Garrett Roe punched in the game-winning goal in Game 7 of the Eastern Final , and Hershey’s defense, backstopped by goaltender Hunter Shepard , held off the high-powered Coachella Valley attack just enough to give the Bears an edge. Hershey’s postseason run piggybacked a thrilling regular season that featured another record-setting Teddy Bear Toss and the best record in the club’s 86-year history, one win shy of the AHL record. In the final week of the 2024 calendar year, the Bears – hunting for a threepeat – sat atop the Atlantic Division standings. Tim Gross is the sports editor at The Sentinel and cumberlink.com . She immediately recognized Tarell McMillian's mugshot. Why? Because he was at the same Food Lion on Monday morning filling her Instacart order, she says. Instacart is a delivery company where users of the platform can pay someone to buy and deliver their groceries to their home. "My Instacart shopper yesterday was Tarell McMillan!" she posted on Nextdoor , the neighborhood social media app. Horan was shot inside the store yesterday morning around 11 a.m. after responding to a call about a man with a firearm inside the Food Lion according to law enforcement. People are also reading... According to screenshots from Gonzalez's post, she had received a message from Instacart at 10:32 a.m. saying McMillian had begun shopping for her. At 11:48 a.m. she had received a notification that her order was running late. Ramona Miller, 63, who was in the store at the time of the shooting, said Tuesday a man who looked like McMillian was rushing through aisles and pushing carts aside to pass. She said she heard five or six gunshots coming from near the produce section. Gonzalez's post goes on to say that McMillan "was at Food Lion and stopped shopping halfway through my order, and my order was reassigned. I thought it was unusual at the time, but didn't think much of it until I saw a news alert about a police officer being shot. My first thought was that my shopper was present when the incident occurred." Gonzalez was shocked to find out it that the person shopping for her was the person being held responsible for the shooting. "It’s chilling to think someone dangerous was almost at my doorstep," she wrote. "I'm now rethinking using these services, especially during the busy holidays. Please stay alert and safe!"
